As a survivor of the "Merlin" fandom I saw this there as well. Apparently Arthur/Merlin totally became canon in the final episode because... I have no idea. Certainly not because they kissed or got married or said "I love you." Maybe it was because they finally stopped treating each other like crap? Arthur finally spat out a single, solitary "thank you" for all the shit he put Merlin through? Merlin decided that it was time to share the fact that he had magic, YEARS after that information would have actually been relevant to the way Arthur ruled his kingdom?

Who the hell knows. But whatever it was, it was totally canon!

Thing is, we're no longer working on a level of understanding in which canon is reinterpreted to fit shipping theories. Now, now we're at a place where the definition of the word "canon" has been reconfigured to mean whatever the hell a shipper wants it to mean so that they can say "my ship is canon".

No matter how "Sherlock" ends, I guarantee you the same thing will happen there. John will be married to Mary with three kids and a fourth on the way, but the fleeting glance he shares with Sherlock will mean "they're totally canon".

The word has lost all its meaning. All you can do is back away slowly.

Arthur and Merlin's love for each other, platonic or otherwise, is canon. They didn't to say "I love you," or kiss to make it canon. It was pretty evident that their relationship went behind the normal bounds of friendship as established by the show (as shown by Arthur's willingness to disregard his duty at some points and Merlin's... well pretty much everything he did). They are both flawed characters, but they are flawed characters who obviously loved each other. I think you could make case for their relationship beyond platonic, and I don't think it would be delusional at all. It's pretty common knowledge that the actor/writers/creators saw their story as a love story.

Who cares about subtext when it comes to things like this? They should either lay it out on the plate or piss off.

Agreed. Most shows (and movies and books, etc) make straight pairings crystal clear, but with gay couples, we have to settle for this subtext/innuendo/read between the lines bullshit? Nope, sorry, not gonna do that. Give us open, clear, even in-your-face gay couples or GTFO.

Well, I agree with that.

NA

As someone who's been in Merlin fandom for the past few years and still clinging on, thank you for saying this. Their love wasn't portrayed as romantic or sexual but IMO, it transcends that. It's that kind of neverending loyalty/soulmate kind of love that has Merlin canonically! waiting till present day.

And as a shipper I can take that kind of relationship and make it romantic -- that's my prerogative. I actually loved that they only had the confirmation right at the end, basically we got all the fanwork that "subtext" encouraged, and got to eat our cake too. Of course Arthur died but... it was perfect for the ship IMO.

For me it was more like Merlin had been so thoroughly brainwashed by the dragon that he couldn't fathom any sort of existence without slaving hand and foot after Arthur.

Sorry, but that whole final season left such a bad taste in my mouth.
