Pocahontas gives us a hilarious version of coastal Virginia (now with moose!), David Ogden Stiers stealing the show, and Mel Gibson playing the male half of a couple that brings warring cultures together in peace and harmony. Lulz like that don't come around every day.

Pocahontas wins in my book. It takes place in my native state.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:37 am (UTC)(link)...what is this, and where can I find it, please? I am completely indifferent to it being historically inaccurate.

It's a fun movie, Anon.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 03:48 am (UTC)(link)I got my cat around that time and since I'm a huge fan of Russian imperial history, was torn between naming her either Anastasia or Tatiana. I finally decided on the latter because I didn't want to have to deal with people asking me "oh, did you name her after the cartooooon?" and then I'd be forced to go off on a rant.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)I do agree with you in that the family were butchered and it's a nasty event, so films like that don't feel very respectful. Even if you were on the side of the bolsheviks, it's still belittles the whole thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)Sorry, I don't buy that.

The problem is not the movie. The problem is ignorant people trying to blame the movie for their ignorance.

Not much else to add to the conversation, I just liked that stuff a lot and thought it was cool that Disney wanted to share facts about the story or where it came from. Do they still do that?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-14 03:40 am (UTC)(link)At the same time I do feel like people have a point in not liking the movie for going by a false story for the movie. Why paint John Smith as a good guy at all if you know the real history paints him as kind of a dick? Why did they need to use his own name for the male lead? More kids would see the movie than would see the little blurb in the magazine. Kind of eh.
Pocahontas is still one of my favorite Disney princesses along with Belle and Jasmine, but knowing that Disney decided to use the tall tale spun by John Smith to make himself look good wasn't that great.

That, and remembering a time before I knew Christian Bale was a jerk.

So watch Pocahontas and marvel at the fact that that douchebag plays Thomas.
