You're assuming anyone really cares or believes that the Disney versions match reality. Most don't. Most have no trouble accepting that it was all fictionalized.

My mother made it her mission to tell my sister and I "what really happened" when it came to some of the stories Disney chose to adapt: Pocahontas was no different. Hooo boy, I remember her 'accuracy' lectures quite clearly!
