I see a difference between being involved in a fandom and just looking at stuff, mainly because people are always talking about fandom lurkers, whether it's trying to get them to speak up or calling them creepy. I guess 'being in fandom' is more social than 'being a fan' to some people.

That said, it seems pretty easy to stay out of drama, especially in bigger fandoms. You may see it, but they'll probably ignore you if you don't take part. The great thing about social media is that you can, for the most part, shape your own experience.

I'm in a couple of fairly wanky fandoms and I've never had any personal negative experiences in them simply because I stay out of the way of drama. I just watch from the sidelines with popcorn and do my own thing with the people who are cool and chill.
