Most people find it difficult to just not care.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, it can be hard to leave something once it becomes part of your routine.

And mind you, the worst drama doesn't come from random strangers. It comes from friends.

I don't see what's so ridiculous about getting out of a community based around talking about something when most or a lot of the people who are invested in talking about it are not enjoyable to talk to because of drama or just general craziness.

That seems pretty logical to me and I don't see what's there to judge.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
roll back those judgements sassy pants. not everyone reacts to the same things the same way, has the same tolerance, etc. not everyone even views fandom the same way or has it serve the same purpose in their life as someone else. seriously, you are going to be a snotty brat about people doing something for their own well being?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes people have to leave fandom in order to save their sanity, especially in the more wankier fandoms.

I think you are completely not understanding what they mean and are saying. And I am judging you hard for that misunderstanding, jsyk.

I know everyone doesn't react the same way to this kind of things but I agree
When I sense a wave of wank approaching I just shut up, stay right where I am on the sidelines and get the popcorn ready

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking thank you, I actually got into the Sherlock AND Supernatural fandoms because I was promised all sorts of wank and crazy and it's like...barely there? I mean I really had to go digging for it and most of the time it was started by someone that hated the show/fandom in the first place lmao

in b4 spn_gossip, everyone in the entire fandom knows they're goddamn crazypants

I'm surprised I'm the first person to say it, but if you've been in all those fandoms and haven't seen the crazy parts, you're either a) delusional or b) the crazy we're talking about. One fandom, maybe, but all of them seems unlikely.

But anyway, that's not the point. The fandoms with needless drama are usually exhausting, very divisive, and disliked by most people outside that fandom. Wanting to avoid them makes perfect sense.

try thinking outside your own box perhaps

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Idk when I say something like that it's because I know myself and my obsessive tendencies and can tell when certain fandoms are going to suck me in and prooooobably end in an unhealthy relationship. There is a certain kind of "crazy" that just lures me in, so I know to stay away from that fandom.

I don't think it's a bad thing and I think your judgment (like most) comes from a lack of empathy and understanding. Just because something is "not that hard" for you doesn't mean everyone else feels the same way. And just because you don't understand something doesn't mean you should mock and judge.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom has this way of dogpiling on folks, even if they're over in the corner minding their own business. That's what makes it such a hard place to exist.

A fandom is not a living, breathing thing that immediately attacks you the moment you set foot into it.

It's like you've never heard of the WTNV Tumblr fandom. You lucky dog.

Half the fun of enjoying a work comes from fandom

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-02-13 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
From discussing the use of scarlet instead of crimson for a sentence in a book. From the discussion of a scene shot in blue rather than green. From writing and drawing and sharing that stuff with other fans (but never the creators). From finding someone else with whom you can share you love for a particular song or even how much you hate liking something because of a certain writer/actor but damn if the acting/writing isn't so superb.

If I don't want to get into a particular fandom, I know I'd be shutting myself off from that particular part of being a fan and more often than not, that's enough for me not to get into the work. Fandom enhances my enjoyment of creative works the same way that friends enhance my enjoyment of experiences in real life. I can go hiking and watch the sunset and shop by myself, but I'm way less likely to expend the effort if I know I'm not going to get as much out of it because I'd be doing it alone.

The community around something is a big part of enjoying something. I like the Thief series. If not for Thief I never would've found a certain message board I enjoy posting at, probably. I want to talk about it with someone. Unfortunately, the only people around to talk about it with are Thief fans.

The problem is that the Thief fanbase is so small, and yet so vocal, that even just by my proximity in a separate subforum I get associated with the petting zoo. At least with Fallout fandom (as an example) it's big enough, and enough friends of mine have played it, that I can discuss the games without having to go to No Mutants Allowed or, god forbid, RPG Codex. I don't even have to go to tumblr. Not so with Thief. And Thief fans regularly come up with surprising new ways to be embarrassing. I've been told by a woman in her 40s who really should know better that I couldn't possibly have played Thief 1 and 2 because I like 3. It was completely surreal, because I expect that from 20-something basement-dwelling boys with neckbeards, not from a grown woman! I really don't understand what it is about Thief that makes people act like this.

I continue to post there because I still enjoy the games and I'm still interested in the impact of the new game, even if I don't really play the old games anymore. That doesn't mean I have to be their friend. Especially if I'm going to have to put up with the "omg square-enix shill" or "YOU NO TR00 THEEF FAN" from people who by and large should know better.

No, not exactly. But it did attack the idea of Bela and Ruby before Season 3 even started when we knew nothing about them. And when I dared to like Bela, I was not really attacked, but told how wrong I was and how awful of a character she was. And heaven forbid when I tried to bring up discussions of how female characters were treated vs. male characters. So, no, the fandom was not a perfectly wonderful place where I could stay in my own corner, saying the things I wanted to say.

I see a difference between being involved in a fandom and just looking at stuff, mainly because people are always talking about fandom lurkers, whether it's trying to get them to speak up or calling them creepy. I guess 'being in fandom' is more social than 'being a fan' to some people.

That said, it seems pretty easy to stay out of drama, especially in bigger fandoms. You may see it, but they'll probably ignore you if you don't take part. The great thing about social media is that you can, for the most part, shape your own experience.

Nothing wrong with experiencing fandom the way you're doing, but it seems to be more solitary (or at least, less interactive) than some people prefer. Some people like a lot of meta and discussions and community with a big group of people, and that's where the shit can really go down.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
When were you in the Harry Potter fandom, OP? And where? Because there was crazy everywhere, unless you stuck to the more "remote" places or mostly posted to the news sites, and even then there was at least occasional drama. Now there's hardly ever any, but the series is done as well.

Hmm, not sure if I agree or disagree.

But I do kind of go wtf at people for not wanting to enjoy the source material because of the fandom, when they could just not get into the fandom at all.

Are you one of those people who doesn't understand how and why anyone can have a difference of opinion on the internet and want to discuss it?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way but I also do resent how the majority of people who just do their own thing always get lumped in with the crazies.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Yes, some fandoms are far more dramatic than others, but there are always rational people in them. All you have to do is find those people and spend your time with them instead of the crazies. It's worked for me in multiple fandoms so far.
