Wait, they're doing another movie?

Please tell me it's not The Horse and His Boy.

Comments indicate Silver Chair, so - YAY!

I don't think anyone will ever attempt to adapt The Horse and his Boy and tbh I don't think they should try. xD

HOLY SHIT KATH IT'S BEEN AGES HOWYA BEEN

On one hand, The Horse and His Boy is just so problematic and kind of terrible that it's a blessing that no one will want to adapt it. On the other hand, the wank would have been fantastic, and I would have loved to see humans bonding with talking horses...

Problematic? Do tell. (I've been looking for a good excuse to bag on C.S. Lewis--I find him kind of sanctimonious.)

I would wager a guess it has to do with the portrayal of the Calormenes, who are basically stand-ins for all Middle Easterners. The Calormenes do not come off well in the Narnia books.

CS Lewis didn't run around telling anyone they were going to hell, nor did he try to cram his beliefs down anyone's throat. He had his faults (most of which play out in the Narnia books) but he was a man of faith, nothing wrong with that.

The long story short is that it's set in Calormen, a culture that is effectively a rip-off of Arabic society. Said society is depicted in a very stereotypical manner (i.e. barbaric, crude, etc), and it rather obviously deemed as a 'lower' civilization (the lack of talking animals, most notably) from Narnia, the very obvious Christian/Western European cultural rip-off.

Terrible Orientalism.

Iirc, in addition to the above comments, there's the way Shasta is depicted as inherently morally superior to the Calormenes (despite having been raised by a Calormene parent) on account of being from Europe-analogue-country.

I'VE BEEN GOOD HOW YOU DOIN

Yeah, I always kind of liked Horse and his Boy for the immersive fantasy and the general sense of how Narnia fits into a wider world, and the brief look you get at the Pevensies as adults - but I so hope no-one ever tries to adapt it because it would either be helluva racist or it would have to deviate significantly from the book.

So, you know. Epic wank either way.

(I've been good, busy but good. Still in the Merlin fandom?)

That's what I mean by the wank. If they stick to the book, the racism wank would be ridiculous, but even better would be if the deviated from the book(s) enough to pull it off without the racewank! *apparently wants to watch the world burn* :P

(Still floating around the edges of it, but not been writing much fic on account of starting grad school. So yeah, busy but good!)

Oh man, the wank if the deviated from the book would be beautiful. *has little affection for the Narnia books and so little sympathy for book-purists*

(Same here, mostly. School + other fandoms = I'm on the periphery of Merlin fandom, hoping to step back in a little more once I get more time.)

I'm getting a sudden mental image of a fan-movie that "sticks to the books" being made in response to a non-racist version of that book. Dear god, imagine the bronies of Horse and His Boy fandom!

Racebend the Calormenes and the Narnians. The savage culture that keeps slaves are white (this wouldn't be a stretch, historically speaking); the nice enlightened people who liberate our protagonists are brown and black (or coded as such in the case of non-human Narnians).

It's still a problematic as hell story but that would at least be more interesting.
