NO ACTOR WILL EVER BE A BETTER PUDDLEGLUM THAN THE DUDE IN THE BBC VERSION.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
That's because Tom Baker.

They're finally doing "Silver Chair"? Yisssssssssssss. XD

But I know what you mean about the BBC versions. When they put some $$ into it, they were decent enough movies.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ah I liked the BBC version too but. AAAH OMG THE SILVER CHAIR! IM SO STOKED!
PUDDLEGLUM EVERYONE PUDDLEGLUM!
I also loved how friggin dark and scary TSC is. And I liked how little Aslan was involved in the plot, like he trusted the kids to hold their own. LOVE THAT.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
IDGAF about the effects either (that animatronic Aslan is still pretty freakin' impressive tho) but Ronald Pickup will ALWAYS be the voice of Aslan to me. There are very, very few things I'm that particular about in differing versions, but he is simply the perfect Aslan.

When I see him in other things I just think Aslan. Which can sometimes be a bit weird, like when he was in a drama seducing a woman half his age.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
BBC version was perfection, Lucy and her ill-fitting sweater included. I don't care how cute that new Lucy is, it will never top the BBC version. NEVER!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
...IA, but can someone tell me who the new Lucy is? I get all my fandom news from FS lol.

Pfft, the new movies blow the BBC out of the water. The BBC was so wooden and awkward, while the new movies are really immersive. (Ok, Dawn Treader was... we shall not talk about Dawn Treader.)

Aslan's death in the BBC version was 1000000000000000x more upsetting to me because the Aslan looked real as opposed to CGI.

I don't remember if I've seen the BBC version on not, but I am excited for the Silver Chair release.

I just can't get over those tiny shields.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Never seen the BBC version (FWIW, I've only seen one of the newer films) but man, those swords and shields look REALLY ineffective.

Wait, they're doing another movie?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-02-13 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Please tell me it's not The Horse and His Boy.

Comments indicate Silver Chair, so - YAY!

Hmm I hold out that James Mcavoy blows whoever it was who played Tumnus in the BBC version out the water

But other than that - yeah, I'm with you, OP. The BBC version is my Narnia. *listens to theme on repeat*

Ugh, I hated Lucy in the BBC version. But I loved everything else. I love shitty BBC special effects, are you kidding? Old Doctor Who, the original Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? Yes, please :P

I hope I see someone cosplaying Puddleglum after this movie is released. Dammit, I'm so happy!

I have an unreasonable affection for the BBC Narnia adaptations that no big-budget Disney production can ever take from me.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you OP, I love that BBC version, it fills me with nostalgia. The other thing for me is that the BBC version seems much closer to the books. I haven't really loved any of the films, I see them because I'm a big fan of the books, but they haven't touched me the way the BBC version did.

Plus I feel the landscape seems more in keeping with the descriptions, CS Lewis loved the Golden Valley, in Wales/Herefordshire, and he used those landscapes for his world building. I find all that New Zealand stuff too OTT.

The BBC versions were first broadcast when I was growing up, so they were a formative experience for me and I love them. But I do think they are genuinely better (with the exception of Prince Caspian which is a bit rubbish in both versions). They have more of a sense of magic, for me. Plus Tom Baker! He's absolutely wonderful as Puddleglum.
sabotabby: (books!)

I feel like the BBC versions were truer to the books, though this may be the misty film of childhood nostalgia. The new ones are just too slick for the most part.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I so prefer the BBC versions that I straight up cried when my mother threw away my VHS versions (and twenty years later, I bought the DVD version....to my knowledge, Silver Chair was the last one they made), and I haven't watched the new ones.

But I think I might watch this one because I love the story. The one I wonder if anyone will ever make is A Horse and His Boy.

I hear you, OP! I prefer the BBC version too, probably mostly because it's the one I grew up with. The movies are just too polished, and not good at portraying how horrible war and fighting really is. The BBC version, for all its bad CGI and horrible stunt acting, still managed that. One of my favourite scenes is the one where Peter fights the wolf, because he's clearly very scared but fights anyway.

And the witch! Even Tilda Swinton's acting (which I can't actually remember) pales next to the magnificent BBC witch with her obvious anger management problem. It's actually terrifying to watch when you're young, and was a source of both fascination and amusement when I watched it again last month. There's a terrible beauty in her that's quite fascinating, really.
