I hear you, OP! I prefer the BBC version too, probably mostly because it's the one I grew up with. The movies are just too polished, and not good at portraying how horrible war and fighting really is. The BBC version, for all its bad CGI and horrible stunt acting, still managed that. One of my favourite scenes is the one where Peter fights the wolf, because he's clearly very scared but fights anyway.

And the witch! Even Tilda Swinton's acting (which I can't actually remember) pales next to the magnificent BBC witch with her obvious anger management problem. It's actually terrifying to watch when you're young, and was a source of both fascination and amusement when I watched it again last month. There's a terrible beauty in her that's quite fascinating, really.
