As a child not from the US (I was in elementary school when that movie came out I think aka we hadn't learned about all that stuff in school yet), all I got out the movie was:
1.) Pocahontas was a good person
2.) fighting/killing is bad
3.) You should listen to nature more (I used to know that wind song by heart)
4.) the ending was sad and I wanted John Smith to stay with her

What I got from the movie is that when you run you can look really awesome and sort of imagine animals running with you and your hair doing awesome wavy things and you're basically on a heroic charge.

That's really all I got from the movie as a kid (except shock that she and John Smith didn't end up together, but whatever, more awesome running).
