ok I'll be really honest, comments like this are annoying

I'm not even a vegan but lambasting vegans got old a long time ago. Besides, vegans actually have a pretty damn good point if you ask me.

But vegans lambasting everyone else got old a long time ago too.

But OP wasn't lambasting anyone, and the vast, vast majority of time when I see a "haha, lol a vegan" comment it wasn't provoked by any lambasting. The lambasting vegan stereotype is old, tired, and stupid. It's just as dumb as "ew, a feminist" because radfems are loud. People need to get over it.

I have no issue with veganism in itself, I do have an issue with a holier-than-though attitude a subset of them have, where it becomes less about a personal lifestyle choice, but more about a way to feel morally superior (and apparent, in this case, reeaaallly into animals).

As for them having a point: Ehm, maybe somewhere, but not here unless you're deliberately obtuse.Keeping animals for food and trying to kill them humanely is not the same as letting them fight to the death in cruel back alley fights, torturing them, or a dude sticking his dick up a sheep's ass.

But can you not see how silly it is to automatically apply your attitudes towards the subset towards the entire group?

And, erhem, actually, in many cases the way we raise animals for food is pretty fucking terrible. In concept no there's nothing wrong with it, but don't tell me you think factory farming is actually humane.

(Nobody is saying back alley fights or bestiality are ok, either. They're definitely not.)

this!

(and you don't even have to be interested in animal rights to see benefits in vegan/vegetarism

this anon studies ecology and would now rather eat more energy, water and co2 efficient products with a fair price. but try finding meat & animal products which aren't horrible or horrible expensive in that regard! *longingly sighs for good cheese*)

The "found the vegan" thing is pretty much a joke, based on the old
"How do you know someone is a vegan?"
"They will tell you."

But fine, I'll concede I might have generalized. I'll even concede the way we kill animals is not always pretty. I try to eat a lot of meat from biological farmers, but you know, I'm not rich and I can't always afford to be picky.

But here's the thing. That original post IS classic vegan activism rhetoric, I'll tell you why. It's trying to create a false dichotomy, that if you condone eating animals, you must also condone killing them for sport or fucking them. It's part of the sale rhetoric that calls omnivores "hypocrites" for having pets and eating meat, while in fact there is no contradiction. You can consider animals part of your food source but still not want to kill them for sport. You can care about specific animals more than about others (just as you care more for some humans). There is no contradiction here, even though they meant that as an original set-up.

I guess I interpreted the comment conversely: "If you are against these horrible practices (like animal fights), it makes sense to also be against factory farming." And...that's not a false dichotomy at all. It's uncomfortable, but it's also true that they are all really horrible things that are bad for the same reasons. The only reason we are ok with one horrible thing is because it benefits us, and people would rather just pretend it doesn't exist, when in fact it's just as cruel as other forms of animal abuse. And you'll notice OP wasn't talking about the actual practice of eating animals, but the WAY we raise and kill them, so it's not an attack on omnivory.

Basically, yes it's rhetoric, but it's not attacking anyone and it's also got a good point, so why mock them for saying it? Because it's a kneejerk reaction based on a generalization.

Thaaaank you =_=

I've been annoyed by vegans more than once while browsing vegetarian comms, but the trolls that mock vegans still make me angrier. And this kind of stuff is just stupid.

I've never actually seen any of these self-righteous vegans, though I'm quite sure they exist and they're annoying. But I don't like it when people make fun of vegans (sometimes not even for the self-righteous part, but because they're ~better~ for having an omnivorous diet which...works both ways, ya know?) and the vegans/vegetarians I've met are all really nice people who are not obnoxious about their lifestyle choices.

Re: Why is it okay

They're not actually common. The only place where you're likely to find them frequently is specifically in vegetarian/vegan comms, where the size of the population allows for more than one sample at once.

I swear we're a (mostly? 90%) cool bunch :'(

Eh, I think the annoying ones are more common than you think, or I (and my friend group as a whole) have really bad luck with them.

There's also accounting for luck. I had never known one in person IRL. But online? Heaps.

Sucks to be you, tho'. I'm sorry about that :(

I know you are! I'm a pescetarian, so I'm sort of half in that group? I use the word "vegetarian" when someone offers me chicken because nobody knows what "pescetarian" means lol

It must get annoying having people constantly tell you how annoying you all are because the ones who really are annoying won't shut up...

I swear, though, it's the same in pretty much every group unified around a belief, ideal, or lifestyle. Yet somehow with *this particular* group everyone buys into the idea that you're all crazy. o.O

Re: Why is it okay

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Which one? That you can't "really love pets if you eat meat!"? Or that "everyone should be vegan or they are the worst people ever... Never mind some people actually can't because their bodies are that bad at absorbing certain nutrients that doctors actively tell them they need to eat meat. They are still disgusting murders!"?

'Cause both of those come up far far more often than anything else, and are either incredibly messed up, or false.

Seriously though, most people wouldn't react this way except that -as a group- vegans tend to be vocally judgmental and rude of anyone who isn't vegan.

But neither of those came up in OP's post. So they're not actually relevant here.

as a group- vegans tend to be vocally judgmental and rude of anyone who isn't vegan.

Citation though? I have never witnessed this phenomenon. (Except with PETA people, but if you are on a PETA page, you should already know what the problem is.)
