Re: I am Euphoric...

From what I can tell, because the usual face (not necessarily a fair representation, but usually what people encounter) of internet atheism is Western middle-class white dudes, which extreme feminism hates as a rule.

The thing that I don't understand is the way so many people seem to think this is a problem unique to atheism. It's a trap that most social justice movements fall into - including feminism itself. How often is mainstream feminism criticized for being too focused on the problems of white, Western, middle-class women? For how long was the fictional Will (of Will & Grace) and the real-life Dan Savage the face of the LGBT movement? Our society has a problem with listening to the most privileged person in the room, even when it's talking to representatives of a marginalized group. So I guess I just don't get why people so often seem to think this is a problem specifically with atheism.

I'm confused, I wasn't really aware anyone thought the most privileged people in a group getting the most attention was unique to atheism? Like, extreme social justice tends to target Western white guys no matter what group they're a big part of and make a lot of noise about.

Fair enough; I've just seen the "rich white guys" argument used to attack the atheist movement(s) enough times that I get a little jumpy - some people like to claim that atheists don't experience any sort of marginalization because they're all a bunch of Richard Dawkins clones (wealthy, white, male, etc.), completely ignoring or denying both (a) the way atheists are actually treated (especially when they don't have all those other kinds of privilege), and (b) the diversity within the atheist movement and atheists in general.
