I've also noticed that mainstream Western feminism tends to be very conflicted about Islam and Christianity, because racism, classism, and xenophobia can be very easily hidden behind "but we're trying to save women!" It's all very murky.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 06:17 am (UTC)(link)The thing that I don't understand is the way so many people seem to think this is a problem unique to atheism. It's a trap that most social justice movements fall into - including feminism itself. How often is mainstream feminism criticized for being too focused on the problems of white, Western, middle-class women? For how long was the fictional Will (of Will & Grace) and the real-life Dan Savage the face of the LGBT movement? Our society has a problem with listening to the most privileged person in the room, even when it's talking to representatives of a marginalized group. So I guess I just don't get why people so often seem to think this is a problem specifically with atheism.
