I am Euphoric...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't understand why the more extreme feminists and SJWs are the ones who run the whole atheists claiming god is dead and fedora tipping into the ground the most.

You'd think they'd find the systematic issues with the worst elements of islam and christianity worse, but apparently neckbeards are actually the greatest threat to true equality?

Re: I am Euphoric...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I find it funny that SJWs are all about not treating people badly based on appearance or w/e, but they're to-go-to image of fedora atheists is basically the grossest looking person imaginable.

This has been my complaint for a long time - not because of the poor oppressed lolbertarians, but because reinforcing the old trope of evil/bad person = physically ugly is a really shitty thing to do.

Re: I am Euphoric...

Talking about how you have to be a dumb idiot sheeple to believe in an invisible friend in the sky does exactly fucking nothing to address systematic issues with religious practice around the world. That's why. Those are completely unrelated issues.

also I think your claims about who's driving the criticism are kind of wacko but w/e

You know, not every conversation an atheist has is a focused attempt at dismantling religion. Sometimes it's just people grousing about something they think is dumb. Because, hey! People do that!

Re: I am Euphoric...

Yeahhhhhh. Fair. I guess my point in the specific context of OP's post is that (a) you don't have to be an atheist to try to change the systematic inequalities in religious practice, so I don't think it makes sense to talk about it as though atheism plays a special role in that struggle - you can equally well to try to address systematic injustices while still believing in God; believing in God is not the cause of the injustices and (b) I don't think the things that people mostly criticize A Certain Kind Of Atheist Who Seems To Post A Lot On The Internet for (to be specific) are actually related to anything that has to do with addressing systematic inequalities in religion. It just seems like the two parts of OP's post kind of have nothing to do with each other.

Yeahhhh I think the same thing all the time.

Apparently, saying someone's god doesn't actually exist, or (at very worst) being kinda obnoxious, are crimes against humanity now. :/

Like I've said before, the SJW take on religious tolerance is basically just trying to make not caring about facts or evidence look enlightened. Which does not fucking work and oh god why are you people even trying? D:

Nope. Just boggled by people defending every belief they come across and thinking that makes them look more... I don't know, whatever the hell they're going for.

Mostly, I'm annoyed at how people talking about their religions as absolute fact is just great and should be defended at all costs, but an atheist doing the same thing is DISRESPECTING MY BELIEFS, OMG!!

From what I've seen of this whole Euphoric thing, people think its a crime against humanity and pull the fedora tipping neckbeard "Euphoric Athiest" pictures out when you basically act like a smug superior douchebag when talking about people's religions and paint them like a crime against humanity, or saying that people must be really stupid for being in a religion even if they aren't the super devoted kind of religious.

And as usual its all about the attitude. If you go in acting all aggressive and condescending, then (assuming you aren't amongst like minded people) you will probably get a backlash. If you go in being/appearing level headed and reasonable, then someone gets really defensive about it, that's another story.

It's all in the phrasing.

An atheist says "I don't believe in God." That's not an insult, it's merely a statement of belief that you can legitimately call a Christian (or anyone from any other religion) an idiot for taking as an insult.

An atheist says "YOUR God doesn't exist." That is an insult because our hypothetical atheist is targeting the Christian (or Other Religion) specifically and is making it personal.

An atheist says "If you believe in God you're an idiot." That's an insult and if you cannot see it's an insult, you have some serious comprehension problems.

The latter two examples I would feel it is within my right to feel insulted by.

Doesn't "I don't believe in God" kind of imply "I don't believe in your god"? I would not be insulted by either one of these. Hell, I'm a Christian and I've said the second one to other Christians who were being homophobic.

On the topic in general, there is definitely a difference between how things like "God loves you" and "there is no god" are treated. They are exactly the same in how they act like their beliefs are fact but the first is much more acceptable in most circles than the second and I don't think that's right.

Re: I am Euphoric...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Why would atheists claim that god is dead? Doesn't being atheist imply that you don't believe in any god at all, dead or otherwise?

Tbh this whole post reads like it's in another language. I have no idea what you're talking about. It seems the lack of sleep is getting to me.

Because it's a pretty famous Nietzsche quote and some of these discussions tend to go into philosophical territory by their very nature?

I'm confused, too, and I've been getting plenty of sleep. I'm an athiest and a feminist and I don't wear a fedora. I have no idea what any of this is about or what it has to do with SJWs.

Hurray! I'm not alone in not understanding this thread.

Re: I am Euphoric...

Some SJWs have a stereotype of atheists as some weird trinity of neck-bearded, fedora-wearing, and basement-dwelling and OP is wondering why they don't go after other religious beliefs that have more obvious problems.

You don't have to be an extreme feminist to make fun of extreme atheists. In fact, 4chan aka neckbeard central likes to mock atheists as well as feminists.

Re: I am Euphoric...

Radical feminism is for all practical purposes a religion that worships women, though they don't couch it in those terms. If you're the type of person who doesn't buy what any church is selling, there's a good chance you're the type of person who doesn't buy into ANY overblown ideology, including theirs.

Why don't we all agree extremists of every strip are generally jackasses that are better off either being made fun of, or ignored?

The lesson here is never expect one marginalized/minority group to have any empathy or understanding for groups that society shits on for different reasons. People will cling to any shred of privilege they possess.

From what I can tell, because the usual face (not necessarily a fair representation, but usually what people encounter) of internet atheism is Western middle-class white dudes, which extreme feminism hates as a rule. It has little or nothing to do with atheism itself; plenty of feminists are atheists and will still run atheist neckbeards into the ground.

I've also noticed that mainstream Western feminism tends to be very conflicted about Islam and Christianity, because racism, classism, and xenophobia can be very easily hidden behind "but we're trying to save women!" It's all very murky.

The thing that I don't understand is the way so many people seem to think this is a problem unique to atheism. It's a trap that most social justice movements fall into - including feminism itself. How often is mainstream feminism criticized for being too focused on the problems of white, Western, middle-class women? For how long was the fictional Will (of Will & Grace) and the real-life Dan Savage the face of the LGBT movement? Our society has a problem with listening to the most privileged person in the room, even when it's talking to representatives of a marginalized group. So I guess I just don't get why people so often seem to think this is a problem specifically with atheism.
