Maybe I'm weird, but I thought Pocahontas was good and awesome when I was young not because she saved a white man, but because she stopped two different peoples from outright slaughtering each other over something that wasn't even fucking there. And yes, I thought this as a kid and then went and researched into the real Pocahontas--whom I had never heard of before this film.

Good for you. The movie is still an atrocious affront to the real history of a real human being that ages/sexes up a 14 year old, casts a well known douchenozzle as the romantic hero, and plays into so very many stereotypes that it's a wonder it got made.

There are legitimate complaints against this movie for a variety of reasons. Just because you, personally, didn't have a problem with it doesn't really mean it was at any point in its execution a good idea.

I'm a Native American, thank you, white kid.

Look up any trailer. The movie was always based on the legend of her, which everyone knows is inaccurate as fuck. But it still made a goddamn nice backdrop to bring to light that, hey, Native Americans had their lands taken from them (which a character brings up as the actual reason the Native Americans attacked them).

She was still a real person with enough of a history that we can actually trace, "legend" or no, and the movies just crap all over her actual history for some kind of "feel good Disney" crap. Making a "backdrop" for an actual issue while brushing it away with "but then they all learned to understand each other and treat each other well" is still a pretty crappy thing to do.
