question for people with cats!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
whenever we put a collar on our cats they pull it off over their heads: they're really slender with dainty little heads and it seems like only a choking-tight collar would stay so we've been lettin them be collarless in the house but I'm a little worried in case they get out. Any ideas?

Can you combine it to some kind of harness?

Give up. I've never had a cat that wore a collar. If they are determined to keep the collar off you're never gonna force them to change. And when they get out, collars don't really help against wild animals. I've never had a cat taken by someone because it wasn't wearing a collar. Outdoor cats are able to find their home, and if you never let your cats out they won't want to get out.

Have you considered tattooing or branding?

Or you could pierce their ear and attach a little tag to it.

People don't really do this, do they?

No, of course not. Don't mind chard, she doesn't understand cat ownership.

(In all seriousness though I think most dogs and cats have microchips now?)

Cats do get ear tattoos yes, at least in Norway, it is green and it is to mark that they have a chip because a lot of people don't think cats are chipped if they don't have a mark on their ear too.

It is done at the same time they get neutered and chipped. My cat don't have one, all the cats that come from the Animal Shelters do have it.

it looks like this afterwards, then most of it is just rubbed off, leaving a small green dot (the picture is taken right after he got home from the vet, so he was groggy):

His name was Lucifer when I had him, the people who adopted him probably gave him another name, but he looked slightly evil at all times.

I kinda miss the little devil, he was quite nice, but slightly scary on account of being left outside on his own for quite a while.

Same deal with rabbits and dogs around here. If it's microchipped it gets a little tattoo in the ear so people know it has a microchip - just in case the chip moves or something.

Because dunno about others, but collars do not stay on the bunnies.

I forgot which opp the tatt was for, microchip or desexing.

They seem to go hand in hand.

Because I know desexed ferals (cats) tend to get tattooed, but every rabbit I've adopted here has been tattooed at the same time as desexing/microchipping. So idk if it's an either/or. I do know that the tattoo on my ears is my vet's "symbol" and they micrchip all pets so the hope is

wait, I remembered my old rabbit. She was desexed but not micrchipped. When I got her microchipped later down the track, she was given a tattoo. So perhaps rabbits + tattoo = more identification and less desexed.

My cat/dog experience is minimal (don't have any), but since all dogs and cats must be microchipped around here I guess maybe to show they're desexed?

Some Australian medical treatment comes with an ear tattoo - probably desexing. It makes it easier to identify a cat as having been desexed if you can just look in it's ear and find tattoo-scars.

Maybe the OP is more worried about their cat being assumed a stray if it's seen without a collar or other visible mark of ownership. I wonder if they make harnesses that can detach from the leash?

My cats always used to shrug theirs off too. We used to worry they'd be taken away, but it never happened. The cat I have now doesn't have a collar but he spends most of his time indoors so we're not fussed about him.

Try a harness if you really must have a collar on the cats, but if you're worried about them getting out and getting lost, the best option is to have them microchipped.

I never had a cat that couldn't slip its collar, so I don't even bother--my cat is chipped, and when I take him out, he goes on his leash and wears a harness.

I don't know anyone who have a collar on their cats, most of them are chipped tho, but as long as they are friendly(ish) and don't look like they aren't fed there shouldn't be a reason for anyone to think they don't have a home.

I would chip them, but other than that a collar is not necessary.

And for the love of everything do not put a harness on them when they are outside on their own, even normal collars are dangerous if they don't have the automatic release thing as they could get stuck in something and not get out.

I'd just go for a microchip. My cats are exclusively indoor and we've never attempted to collar them, but if they did get out I think I'd be just as worried about the collar getting snagged or stuck on something.

My family's cats are microchipped and haven't had collars since they came out, I think pretty much all the cats where I live are chipped these days bar the few I see with collars and most are indoor/outdoor cats.

I'd still try to get a snug collar on them. My little cat hated his collar at first and was always scratching at it, but he's gotten used to it. Halters might be even more annoying but at least they can't take it off.

If they're microchip'd then at least you'll have something if they get out and don't make it back.

Do a microchip instead. Some cats will *not abide* a collar, and the way they squeeze into tiny spaces, it could be a choking hazard. Our cats have never worn collars, and microchipping isn't all that expensive.

Re: question for people with cats!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Agreeing with the others--microchipping is best. If you can, they have breakaway collars made to come off if it gets stuck (to keep your cat from choking) but if they won't keep it on, they won't keep it on. I've had some who don't mind collars, but for the most part mine have never worn any.

I've never really had a problem with a cat that's resisted a collar, but all my experience is with cats I've had since kittenhood, and we started training them to wear a collar basically right from when we got them.

However if I got the chance to have a cat now, I would get a microchip as a backup the cat can't remove.
