Have you considered tattooing or branding?

Or you could pierce their ear and attach a little tag to it.

People don't really do this, do they?

No, of course not. Don't mind chard, she doesn't understand cat ownership.

(In all seriousness though I think most dogs and cats have microchips now?)

Cats do get ear tattoos yes, at least in Norway, it is green and it is to mark that they have a chip because a lot of people don't think cats are chipped if they don't have a mark on their ear too.

It is done at the same time they get neutered and chipped. My cat don't have one, all the cats that come from the Animal Shelters do have it.

it looks like this afterwards, then most of it is just rubbed off, leaving a small green dot (the picture is taken right after he got home from the vet, so he was groggy):

His name was Lucifer when I had him, the people who adopted him probably gave him another name, but he looked slightly evil at all times.

I kinda miss the little devil, he was quite nice, but slightly scary on account of being left outside on his own for quite a while.

Same deal with rabbits and dogs around here. If it's microchipped it gets a little tattoo in the ear so people know it has a microchip - just in case the chip moves or something.

Because dunno about others, but collars do not stay on the bunnies.

I forgot which opp the tatt was for, microchip or desexing.

They seem to go hand in hand.

Because I know desexed ferals (cats) tend to get tattooed, but every rabbit I've adopted here has been tattooed at the same time as desexing/microchipping. So idk if it's an either/or. I do know that the tattoo on my ears is my vet's "symbol" and they micrchip all pets so the hope is

wait, I remembered my old rabbit. She was desexed but not micrchipped. When I got her microchipped later down the track, she was given a tattoo. So perhaps rabbits + tattoo = more identification and less desexed.

My cat/dog experience is minimal (don't have any), but since all dogs and cats must be microchipped around here I guess maybe to show they're desexed?

I helped a friend have her kitten desexed and microchipped at the same time. I don't recall which the ear tattoo was for, but Seth got one.

I know microchipping is very much of an advantage here, since cat registering came in in Brisbane a few years ago.

Some Australian medical treatment comes with an ear tattoo - probably desexing. It makes it easier to identify a cat as having been desexed if you can just look in it's ear and find tattoo-scars.

Maybe the OP is more worried about their cat being assumed a stray if it's seen without a collar or other visible mark of ownership. I wonder if they make harnesses that can detach from the leash?
