Stealth cosplay/con advice?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
In a few weeks, there's going to be an anime con about an hour's drive away from me being held at the same center as a huge book fair! They overlap neatly on a Sunday, and I'm planning to attend both. I'd love to do a stealth cosplay that would work well on either side, but am coming up blank, and Googling stealth cosplay turns up mostly Marvel/DC characters. Does anyone have ideas or resources to suggest? (Anime/manga/Japanese gaming is the focus at the con.)

Also, I've always been curious about con volunteering sometime in the future but have also heard (honestly rather vague) warnings against it. But I like participating in things with a lot of moving parts, and think it's useful to understand what works and what doesn't (I've also already experienced volunteer events that ended up being poorly run, run by someone who was on near-constant meltdown, needed fewer or more hands, etc.)... So, anyone have experience or advice?

You could always dress as someone from a "mundane" (read: not fantasy or sci-fi or whatever) property where people dress like they do IRL, but manage to have a certain style.

Guy or girl? Do you care?

Don't care!

If you have a red hoodie and a camo bag, you could always be Tenho from The World Ends With You.

Dress up as a character from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. (If you like that movie/comic) Use a wig rather than dying your own hair. And when you go to the book fair, simply remove the wig. You'll look normal.

I'd probably just go in whatever costume, as long as it's comfortable... There'll probably be at least a few other people attending both events and rolling around the book fair in costume. :D

No comment on the stealth cosplay, because everyone I've dressed as in the past has been rather over the top.

However, volunteering can be tons of fun! I helped set up the art room at a convention by mistake - one of my friends was on the door, and I was keeping her company. A couple of people came in and needed help hanging their art, so I volunteered, and wound up getting invited to the Dead Dog party afterward, with the guests.

I dunno if you're female or not, but would Mirielle from Noir be an option? You could skip the leather and go for a regular black mini skirt, and pair it with a pair of stockings and a jacket.

I did this once because it was too cold to walk around in a dinky li'l leather mini. I was a happy cosplayer.

If you can braid your hair into pigtails (or if you have long blonde hair...or a frog head), you can just put this symbol on a pink shirt and be Madotsuki from Yume Nikki.

I feel like Beat from Jet Set Radio (or Jet Grind Radio) would be a relatively easy (and fun) cosplay (uh, as long as you didn't actually wear skates) and it's a bit of a cult hit so I don't think everyone would recognize you either. (Although if you don't know it you might not feel like bothering...but the goggles and headphones could be taken off quickly, so there's that.)

Uh, and Vyse from Skies of Arcadia. If you didn't go full out it would be pretty simple to put together. (And again, you could easily remove the eyepatch and belt, etc.)

Con volunteering all depends on the con itself. There are conventions that train their staff and instruct their volunteers and they do pretty well. Some conventions are absolute shit to/with their gophers who in turn can't help people with questions on where a panel is or containing a line.

Wear what you like, but drape a towel over your shoulders.

Not anime, but the book guys will get it.

If you have the time and money, you could look around online for a T-shirt or hoodie with the logo of a fictional organization from something you like. There are also shirts that mimic things like Star Trek uniforms or have superhero logos. If any of your fave characters dress in business suits and you have a similar suit, that could be a way to go. When The X-Files was big, I used to see a lot of people at cons in suits with fake FBI badges. Sometimes all you need to suggest a character is a certain prop or accessory or color combination.
