It pisses me off too when they ignore Cassandra and Barbara.

But on the other hand, it gives me a twinge of satisfaction when they leave out awful overrated boring Stephanie, so...

Well, it does piss me off when they leave out Cass and Steph.

Cass, Steph, Babs, Helena, Kate, Selina, Holly, and god knows how many characters with smaller roles.

Stephanie Brown is everything I want to be when I grow up.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I never really liked Stephanie as Robin, but I fucking ADORED her as the Spoiler. She was amazing.

Then, too, I was also really into it when she hooked up with the Birds of Prey crew as the new Batgirl. That felt like a validation of her in a way that being Robin didn't, and brought out her basic joie de vivre.

Actually, now that I think about it? I think I just never liked how Stephanie worked with Bruce. Total anti-chemistry, should never have tried to work together.

Steph was one of the best things about the Robin series.

Oh you beautiful troll. You almost had a point, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
...How are they a troll? Batfamily should include the girls.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I assume the last line at the bottom, which I missed my first read-over. (Although from what I know about Jason, saying he's less loved is not particularly trollish.)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The last line on the secret. That's fine wankbait. I mean, who "Bruce loves best" is 1) irrelevant to who was or wasn't Robin, and 2) really depends on the writer and your own reading.

There are a few possible takes on this lineup, it could be representing:
- Batman & Robins, in which case Steph is missing.
- Bruce & his kids (adopted or otherwise), in which case Cass is missing.
- Batfam, in which case most of the Batman cast is missing.
- People who act like family (siblings & parent, excluding lovers), in which case Alfred and maybe Cass are missing (I'd argue that Cass has a complicated relationship with the rest of the batkids and her place in the family is not as clear cut as some of the others, but that's a personal interpretation. Steph and Damian also often act like siblings and she's close to Tim but does not have a familial relationship with the others).

Again, all of this has shit all to do with "Bruce also loved Cass more than Jason or Damian".

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, here.

Yeah I realize the last bit was unnecessarily dickish. My bad. I made the secret when I was feeling especially bitter. I just hate all the emphasis in Batfamily fandom of Bruce's love for Jason and Damian, while completely ignoring that he loved Babs and Cass too, and had a very close relationship with Cass.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
For me it's that Bruce is hugely affected by Jason in a way that Cass, Tim & Damian cannot match. Jason's death was a pivot moment for Batman and the only similar one was his own "death".

I'm not sure how much Bruce loves Damian, anyway, rather than feel very responsible for him, and I'm not sure most comic writers do either. I mean, Damian's true mentor is Dick. Bruce can barely get through to him and barely tries to understand him most of the time.

Anyway, what Cass stories do you recommend? I've only seen bits and pieces and the only TPB I actually bought was "Destruction's Daughter" which is a huge mess and was sort of taken over by the crisis leadup...

Although I don't agree with the last part of the secret, I do find it odd that fandom always depicts Jason as 'belonging' with the Bats, given that after his return he was always the pariah of the family, especially with Tim and Dick. (Guess it's just fandom's tendency to make angsty canon fluffy.)

IA, I haven't even read that many of the Batman comics yet but it constantly feels like someone is ragging on Jason.

Jason is flat out the kicking bag/black sheep of the Bat family. If it wasn't for Steph, I would think that he was the Robin that was treated the worst by writers. I've read a bit of fan meta on how the DC has a strong underlying theme of classism, and I couldn't agree with it more.

I don't know how it is in the reboot, but Dick and Tim never viewed Jason as anything more than a villain after he came back. Whereas fanfic and fanart always portrays all this 'brotherly love' between all the Robins.

This reminds me of the surge of Avengers fanarts after the movie came out. A majority of them didn't include Black Widow.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Why don't you just say "way too many" of them didn't include her? That way I wouldn't have this irresistible urge to ask for your numbers and where you got them.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
They may be trying to go for just Bruce + his kids rather than the whole extended family. I do think "Bruce + kids" should include Cass, though, since I was under the impression that she was, if not legally adopted, then at least considered one of Bruce Wayne's (rather than just Batman's) "wards" or what have you. As much as I love Babs and especially Steph, they are not Bruce's kids however you slice it. They each still have a parent and were never looking to be taken in by Bruce before reaching adulthood. Also, while I'm not sure exactly what the comics continuity for this is, I thought Barbara's origin as Batgirl was less "Come child, be my sidekick" and more "I'm gonna do what you do, mister, so suck it up and deal." Steph was only briefly Bruce's protege. The rest of the time, she was either on her own or, later, learning from Babs.

Anyway, I would like to see more of the female members of the Batfamily, too.

Obligatory recs thread

(hopefully I'm not too late)

For gen Batmfamily fics that aren't just a sausage fest. Anyone?

Also OP: I agree but sadly even DC seems to love ignoring them so I don't see that changing any time soon.

The batfamily is pretty big, but the only ones he actually adopted were Dick, Tim, Jason, and Cassandra with Damian as his biological. I'm only upset when Cass gets left out, everyone else is too much to draw TBH.
