I have never once seen someone get called a homophobe for saying they prefer gen. I could sort of see people saying that if you make a point of saying how much you hate slash, although that would mostly just make me wonder why you've forgotten het and femslash exist, but just saying "I prefer gen to shippy stuff" doesn't seem like it would get that reaction from even the most ridiculous people in fandom.

+Several.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen this happen a few times. It depends on what fandoms you're in, I guess?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Over the 14 years I've been in various fandoms, I've experienced the same.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it all depends on how you voice this opinion. "I don't read much slash, I prefer gen"? No problemo. Reviewing a slash fic by going on and on about how the couple would have been better as friends? Probably going to raise some hackles. It doesn't mean you are a homophobe, but people say stuff when they're pissed.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's weird as hell but I'm sure it's happened. There are a few fandoms (okay, there's Sherlock fandom) where saying you don't ship the popular m/m pairing will get you death threats.

Oh okay, I see the twisted logic now. "I prefer gen" = "I don't ship the popular m/m pairing and I read gen to escape the icky gay". Obviously I disagree but I think I see where it's coming from now.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's based on a logical fallacy.

Disliking one m/m ship =/= thinking all m/m ships are icky.

Yep. I'm not saying it's a good argument in any way, I just like to try to understand these things as well as I can because it's interesting to me.

I've seen it happen. It doesn't seem to happen if people don't read het or femslash, but not reading slash can get *some* people up in arms. Like someone else said, maybe it depends on the fandom?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. Not liking/wanting to read slash and requesting gen, just got slash fics plastered all over my request thread. :P Repeatedly. :P Even after I politely asked them to stop. :P And it was a mod doing it, so I couldn't report them. :P

This person did NOT come out and publicly call me homophobic, I should add. Sooooo maybe that's what happened with OP? Some places might not throw around the HOMOPHOOOOBE!!!!! accusation outright, but they can still do a lot to make those who don't want to read slash, feel unwelcome in a passive-aggressive way. IDK?

I'm a massive gen fan, and I've never???? ever???? been called a homophobe for liking gen? Do you lurk in some particularly dark corners of tumblr? I fancy it must be rather hard to find people who'd call you a homophobe for liking a genre that excludes any romance altogether, het and slash alike.

It's just inaccurate. Maybe "romancephobe" or "erotophobe" would be better terms. And IDEK if they would actually manage to offend anybody.

I've seen wanks second hand where the Supernatural fen have pulled this card, especially if you dare say your squicked by Wincest.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking the same thing, I've seen this in some corners of the Supernatural fandom. Also in the Thor section of the MCU fandom. IDK if it's a juggernaut pairing thing, or just an 'incest fans forgetting that there's reasons other than the characters' genders to be squicked the fuck out' thing.

This entire thread has kind of destroyed some of my faith in humanity. Just. WHAT. It's awful that the "gen fan=homophobe" is a chain of reasoning that is actually used by some people.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like if a "secret" advertises that it's intending/expecting to make the failbar it shouldn't get posted at all. Screwing up because your secret is borderline or you weren't paying enough attention to the rules is one thing, deliberately submitting something that doesn't follow the rules is another.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
lol that is kind of dumb, especially since this could've easily been worded as a secret

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems to me that this one could have been "take it to the comments" just as easily.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this said about people who like gen, or exclusively like gen? Because I'm a massive and fairly outspoken gen fan (I'm also asexual, so it's come up in discussion a few times), and I've never gotten comments like this. However, while my gen fic output is more than all other types of fic combined, I've also written a bundle of slash, het, mixed threesomes/moresomes and the odd bit of femmeslash as well, so possibly that's why it never came up with me?

I have gotten comments from people who primarily associated me with some of my slash ships being surprised that I wrote het and gen too, though. So I suppose it's maybe however people first encounter you as well?

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-02-15 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I vaguely remember there were people who acted like that way back in the day, mostly in anime and/or JRPG fandoms (usually was the big/popular ones), but I hardly see anyone acting like that nowadays. Or maybe it's just because I don't really read fic all that much anymore. idek. My memory is really, really foggy.

It just depends on the fandoms you hang out in, I suppose.

I suppose there are fandoms where gen would get flamed more than rape, but I have a hard time believing there are many where it would get you flamed more than necrophilia. (Corpse Bride doesn't count--undead isn't exactly dead.)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I've never heard of that happening at all in the fandoms I've been in, but considering all the bullshit I see on Tumblr, I'm not surprised. I like both slash and gen, so it's ridiculous that people shit on other people for, *gasp* having preferences in fic.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-02-16 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
....what?

I do not think that's how it works, OP

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I've had both reactions. Most people even those who preferred slash were cool with me liking only gen. But some folks could be pretty awful and make you feel like a bug on the sole of fandom if you didn't want to read slash in "their" fandom. (Because the slash fans obviously owned the show and anyone who didn't "see the slash" was a homophobe or delusional or both. sigh.)

These days I don't mind some slash if I am okay with the pairing, though I'm pretty much out of fandom altogether. I didn't find fandom a very healthy place after a time, and this attitude was part of it. I was in older slash-heavy fandoms awhile ago.
