I don't think age plays that big a role in quality when it comes to art. I've seen people's skills improve with age but I've also seen thirty-something adults whose drawings look like my three-year-old cousins'.

when it comes to art, sure. but most teenagers trying to write fic from the pov of a 40+ year old character is honestly painful.

In my experience, older artists tend to be better because they usually have more experience.

Is that always case? Of course not.

But are there more skilled adults posting good fanart than teenagers? Probably.

Though, a lot of them more on to original art.

I agree, and writing is one of these things that generally get better with age (like fine wine!), but 40-something writers sometimes have difficulty writing teenagers as well. It's painfully obvious that some of them rely on tropes and stereotypes to write their high school AUs.

Those fics are usually the ones written by teenagers. If you ever see a teen character acting like they are in their mid-thirties, then dollars to donuts that was a teen writer. Teen writers generally make teen characters seem too old because they want to think teenagers are far more mature than they really are. Same with tropes and cliches, all teenagers start out by leaning too heavily on them simply because they do not yet have the life experience to step beyond them.

Separately, just to save me writing two posts on this thread, here is writer John Scalzi's advice to teen writers. Note rule 1.

Nah, older adults are the same exact way. All you need to do is go to the YA section of your bookstore to realize that.

It might be, but at this point I'd almost appreciate a teenage writer actually attempting something outside their scope instead of the billion highschool/college AUs and/or age-down stories.

I think what it basically boils down to is that you get better with experience. So those who are older are more likely to be better because they have more experience. Of course, I've seen a twelve year old whose graphics were so excellent, she sent the 20-somethings running away crying, but it is generally like that.

Yeah, I agree. You begin accumulating experience the moment you start practicing. Two 25-year-olds might have the same age but if one of them started drawing/writing/whatever at 12 and the other at 18 they won't have the same level of experience.
