Easy. Castiel is paired with Dean. So people figure Sam needs an angel. So they either ship him with Gabriel or Lucifer (depending on what type of story they are going for). Hell, Lucifer at least spent a significant amount of time with Sam.

I'm not sure why it's popular, but I understand the appeal from a fucked up perspective. Part of it is "pairing Sam with an angel" but since Sam & Lucifer are "made for each other" that attracts some people.

What're everyone's favorite fics for this pairing because I've only found one I liked, but I like this pairing a lot. (Lucifer was really sympathetic in it, so it's probably a bad example but I liked it anyway.)

Pretty much every pairing in Supernatural is really fucked up in canon and fanon, so I don't know what you expected, OP. People ship Wincest as something fluffy, ffs.

I honestly don't understand Sam/Lucifer at all. It's pretty much been stated outright that Lucifer raped Sam in Hell, and just no thank you.

I've never seen these so called leaps of logic. While I don't like the pairing, I don't mind people shipping them (ship whatever you want to), but these leaps of logic are worrying.

Hey, people shipped Dean/Alistair before Lucifer was in the picture, and its also pretty much stated that Alistair raped Dean. Although, admittedly, I've never seen anyone ship it in a romantic sense. Its always, as far as I've seen, written either in a creepy, fucked up, Dean-has-issues kind of way or straight up torture porn.

I don't ship these two--I ship Sam-AS-Lucifer. With anyone, really, because I loooove Lucifer!Sam. But yes, anything involving Lucifer should realistically be fucked up and involve manipulation and torture, unless it's intentionally crackfic.

i'm with you op. samifer is my spn otp and i've actually contributed a lot to the fanfic side of that pairing in the past but i ship it because it is fucked up (while acknowledging it is fucked up and unhealthy).
