hi, don't mind me, just venting

Scenario #1:

"Hey, you like SFF, right?"

"Yes, I do!"

"You need to try this book! It's sooooo good!"

"Sorry, I don't like urban fantasy."

"BUT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND, THIS ONE IS AMAZING OMG YOU HAVE TO READ IT."

Scenario #2

"Hey, I would like some SFF recs! But please no urban fantasy, it doesn't interest me."

Every single fucking response: "I KNOW YOU SAID YOU DON'T LIKE URBAN FANTASY BUT YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS IT'S SOOOOOO GOOD OMG."

That's frustrating. There are a lot of people who need to learn how to give recommendations. That it's about the tastes of the person you're recommending to, not what you like. Unless of course they ask for what you like because they want to branch out.

I get that about steampunk stuff. Genuine Urban Fantasy I can take or leave, it's not my favorite but if it's highly rec'd I'll look into synopses, see if I'm into it. But if it's steampunk, I'm not going to read it no matter how much I'm told "But this one's different!" Especially if it's suggested as an alternate history rec. NOPE.

"But it's different! (description of all the current most common tropes, especially the ones you hate. packaged the same way as everything else)"

OMFG THIS! It's so freaking annoying.

I don't get how you can know you hate something without giving it a chance, but whatever. People like to share the things they like. It's okay if you're not into it but they're not obligated to give you exactly what you want.

I'm sorry, if you ask a group of people for recommendations with one exception/caveat and they only give you recs for that specific thing, it's rude. If you list 4 fantasy novels and 1 of them is your favorite EVER example of the exception listed, it's one thing because the other 3 are valid choices. But if you only provide something they don't like, it comes across as petty, defensive (the need to prove its validity or justify your enjoyment of it), and rude.

It's like saying you want sushi rolls but not California rolls because you don't like avocado. And then being given a big plate of only California rolls.

Well, that's different.

How do you know they've "never given it a chance"? The OP never says anything beyond "I don't like it" which implies that, yeah, they have read at least some of it. Assuming that "I don't like something" = "I've never given it a chance"? Pretty silly.

My sympathies. People generally have a pretty good idea on what they want to read so people disregarding it is frustrating as hell - then if you give in, read the damn thing and go figure you don't like it - they proceed to get snarky about why did you waste your time if you knew you wouldn't like it? There's just no winning sometimes.
