In my circle of fandom friends, everyone was really underwhelmed by Twelve's costume.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
This is the first I've seen of his outfit, but all I care about is that it's inhabited by Peter Capaldi.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
It does look goofy but I'd like to see it in action more before making a final judgment. I don't think Capaldi's stance there can help - he would look incredibly goofy like that no matter what he was wearing.

YANA, anon.

I like Capaldi, I think he'll probably be an interesting Twelve, but the clothes are very understated (yes, to the point of being almost boring.) ... which is fine, because his face is the high point anyhow.

P.S. I highly approve of your taste in vamps.

Look, I'm pretty disappointed with present era Doctor Who, but at least it's not a suit with question marks all over it.

I think I...don't really care what the Doctor wears. I also think that, based on what you've written here, you might be more than "bored" with this outfit. I think it might be a slightly stronger form of dislike.

Which is cool, and all. It's just something that struck me.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Dat nice slimfit coat, tho. And I do believe that's a waistcoat beneath it.
ginainthekingsroad: The Third Doctor spreads his cape dramatically (DW- Three cape)

Everyone I saw seemed to like it for the obvious Pertwee reference (the red lining and that specific Pertwee promo pic with the similar pose) and the implication that Capaldi might be Three-like in contrast to Smith's consistent Two-isms. It's more they're excited about where the character will go, and less about the new costume. I think it will look better on film than the first photo lets on, but it is a little drab. It's good he doesn't have a tie of any kind, what with Eleven's bow ties and the fact that Capaldi's own most iconic character was almost always in suit-and-tie.

Is that tieless look with a fully buttoned up shirt starting to be a thing? I always notice it on JLM's Holmes.

So there. Nyah.

I actually hadn't seen this yet, so thanks for that. I'm a bit underwhelmed, but...it's just an outfit? Not that wardrobe isn't important, but the writing and acting come first.

However, I DO love the clothes themselves, I'm just not dying to see it on The Doctor.

I hate the outfit. It's so plain and boring!

You aren't the only one. (Besides, nobody ever is "the only one" in the Internet)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
This is the first I've seen of the costume, but since Three was basically my favourite Doctor, I'm pretty fine with it? It's nothing to write home about, but if the actor in it does his thing alright, I'm pretty much okay with him wearing a somewhat boring nod to my favourite Who era.

Plus, when it comes to the Doctor being a rebel? When you've defied your species up, down and sideways a thousand times over the course of your life and genocided them twice, you can wear basically whatever you want and still be considered a rebel. I think the Doctor is well past the point of being worried about ruining his street cred by this stage, you know?

I have seen exactly zero people 'creaming themselves' over this outfit. Everyone I've noticed talking about it seems pretty neutral, and I agree. It seems...okay? I like the red. But it seems about the same level of boring as the other new Who costumes to me.

I think the outfit is kinda cool but it definitely doesn't look "rebellious" to me

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, let's just wait and see. Maybe he'll rock it. It's the actor not the outfit that's important. Eccleston basically just wore a leather jack and...jeans, wasn't it? He's still my fave.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
He just looks a little plain compared to Manic Pixie Dream Boys 10 and 11.

Also, I feel like Who fandom inflicts this angst on the greater nerd community every fucking time there's a regeneration. It's DW, IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN. Do y'all just keep forgetting that?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have strong opinions re: outfits, but it sounds to me like you're mistaking items of clothing for characterization. Not every Doctor needs a conspicuously quirky accessory in order for people to know he's a "rebel". Besides, Capaldi is more than capable of communicating all the personality the Doctor needs via, well, you know, acting.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not only am I not creaming myself over his outfit, I'm not creaming myself over him. No hate, just indifference. I really just don't care anymore.

It doesn't matter how many or few gimmicks (yes GIMMICKS) the costume has, as long as it's believably something his Doctor would wear.
Nine has the least flashy costume of all the Doctors - it almost blends into the background - and yet it suits him perfectly. The Doctor who's wearing it makes the costume iconic.

To me the simplicity of Capaldi's costume suggests a no-nonsense attitude, but a touch more pompous than Nine based on the formality of it.

It does look really awkward when it folds up at the bottom though.

I have a thing for black jackets/coats/whatever with red lining. But I don't care for that outfit on him, I'd rather have it for myself. Would look great on me. *g* I guess I'll go looking for a nice waistcoat and that jacket now...
aralias: (Default)

[personal profile] aralias 2014-02-20 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
agreed, OP. he looks so sensible and unobtrusive. and that's kind of part of nine's personality - that he didn't want people to look at him after the war. it was also a production decision i.e. rtd didn't want people to look at the doctor and write him off as a silly waste of time. he wanted him to look like everyone else on tv. but the docotr is a ridiculous dandy. andh he does look different to everyone else.

peter calpadi's outfit is nice. it is well cut, and i like that it has a waistcoat. but i completely agree with OP - i was saddened when it appeared.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I like the outfit and was extremely underwhelmed by Nine's costume. It fits Nine's character to a tee, but in terms of boring vs memorable/iconic... it actually did both in the end. We'll just have to wait and see how Capaldi fills the Doctor's shoes won't we now.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Generally when people are bored by something, they shrug and move on. People excited by something, on the other hand, will go on and on about it. I think this might be messing with your perception.

I like the the Third Doctor reference but otherwise? Eh.
