I thought it took place in Vermont?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
…what show were you watching?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Not this! Everything I know about it is from fandomsecrets.

Ah. I was confusing Chesapeake with Champlain.

Maryland has accents? Seriously?

Hell, yes, it does. Big thick ones.

I legit did not realize this. The only Northern accents I recognize are from NY, NJ, and Massachusetts. And that last one is only because my father's from there.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Bulmore sure does. Hey, want some wudder?

After watching The Wire I became very fond of Baltimore, I felt like somehow I knew the city and its people a little even if I've never set foot on it. But The Baltimore of Hannibal is a city I can't recognize. Different parts of the city, I know, but still it's weird to me. /unrelated rant

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not even different parts of the city, it's filmed in Toronto … and the cinematography is stunning but they haven't really gone to any lengths to give it a local flavor* beyond the mention of the Chesapeake Ripper.

Baltimore accents, like Philly accents, seem to be impossible for actors to learn. They tend to go for generic "New Yawk" and call it a day. So I'm glad no one tries, because that shit always pisses me off.

Besides, none of the main characters are necessarily from B'more. Hannibal is...European, Will is from all over the place, Jack could be from anywhere since the FBI recruits from all over the country, and psychologists like Alana frequently find employment close to where they got their graduate degrees and/or travel around the country to find the best jobs. So...yeah. Wow, I had more thoughts about this than I had realized.

I have never heard an actor do a proper Pittsburgh/Allegheny accent. Except people from there, obviously- ZQ, Holly Hunter, Gillian Jacobs, Jeff Goldblum.

[personal profile] rubbertea 2014-02-20 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what a Baltimore accent sounds like, but I already don't understand anything Hannibal says, so bring it on; I already have the subtitles on.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Same, that man's accent is nigh incomprehensible. High five for closed captioning!

It's definitely a show where I prefer watching the German dub, just because of that. :-)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Local accents are a lot to expect from any show that doesn't actually make its setting a major focus.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think the Baltimore-accented show you want is The Wire.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm from Maryland and my initial reaction was "The fuck is a Baltimore accent?" That's still my primary reaction, but even if there is one: it wouldn't actually make much sense to hear much of them. Most of the show actually takes place in Virginia (Will lives in Wolf Trap, the FBI is in Quantico, etc). The only person who lives in Baltimore is Hannibal, who's got his own accent, and maybe the occasional guest star?

Now, if you want to complain about the UNNATURAL amount of snow show!DMV region seems to get, I'm with you on that one.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
How do you not know what a Baltimore accent is? Are you a deaf agoraphobe? I'm genuinely curious about how you don't know. It's not as well known as say a Boston or Brooklyn accent, but it's not like it's undetectable. And as pointed out above, both The Wire and Homicide: Life on the Streets had characters with Baltimore accents.

I'm not from Maryland but I lived there for about six years up until not too long ago and...

...I didn't really hear any strong accents. Now, caveat: I was in central Maryland, not Baltimore but like somebody else said...the show doesn't actually really take place in Baltimore.

I was more annoyed about the "totem pole of bodies" episode that appears to take place on a body of water that simply doesn't seem to exist near Grafton, WV (there is a lake near Grafton [Tygart Lake] but it is long and narrow and you could see no opposite shoreline in the scene plus it doesn't really look large enough to make its own waves). Also the speed at which Abigail got from Maryland to Minnesota and back presumably without any real resources on hand considering she's been in an institution.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm from Maryland too and never realized I had an accent until I left the area. It was a friend from Michigan who finally pointed it out to me and my sister. But I still don't notice it unless it's really exaggerated. I don't know if it's that way for everyone with an accent, but like, when I hear examples like this:

http://youtu.be/d5_ej-qE48A

That all sounds perfectly natural to me. I have to concentrate on each word to pick it out.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, distinctly Baltimore accents are fading pretty fast; middle-upper class Baltimore-dwellers in particular aren't generally going to exhibit much more than maybe a few pronunciation quirks relative to the rest of the mid-Atlantic (see 'wudder' as mentioned upthread), and even the famous 'hon' subculture is more preserved in nostalgia-amber than an actual extant group at this point.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, this. A lot of Baltimore people specifically learn not to speak in the accent, as it is seen as "uncultured". Which is a shame because I love the Baltimore accent.
