Re: MY fav article from a tumblerite on this: I HAVE STRONG FEELINGS ABOUT RICE!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I have strong feelings about rice. When I first started living on my own, I struggled over how much rice to buy to feed only one person. At my home in San Francisco, we have a 50 pound bag that just gets replaced whenever it runs out. I had to google how to cook rice in a pot, because at home we used the rice cooker.

such a brave soul, enduring the struggle of googling how to heat water

Any amount of rice can feed one person, dude! It's just a matter of how long it will feed them for. Get the big bag anyway!

I just cook a lot, then stick whatever is left over in the fridge.

Be careful with leftover rice. It starts growing bacteria in 24-48 hours. Anything that isn't eaten in two days, max, needs to be thrown out or frozen. But rice freezes really well.

good to know! I knew there was something not-so-fresh in my diners. Then again, maybe it's cauliflower. Freshly cooked is better anyway!

Yeah, I mean, sure, I get it when a person living alone despairs when buying fresh produce because they are often in packages that are too large for a single person to eat before going off, but.. rice? Stored in a moderately dry place, it keeps for about forever Oo

And they couldn't have bought a cheap little rice cooker... why? It was one of the first 'essentials' I acquired upon moving out for college, and I was poor as hell.

I'm agog that someone coming from a family that ate a lot of rice would reach adulthood without knowing how to prepare it, rice cooker or no.

I come from a family of four that ate a lot of rice. My parents always cooked it in a lidded saucepan on the stove and this was somehow not a "burden" despite the fact that they had jobs and were always cooking other things at the same time. Cooking rice on the stove does not require constant attention. You learn how to do it and you know about when you need to check on it and in the meantime you can get other things done.

Seriously. It takes all of 15 minutes to cook rice.

I grew up with stove-top boiled rice as well. Sometimes I really cannot stand to pull out my big awkward multicooker (a rice cooker with lots of other functions, including pressure cooker and slow cooker) to make a smallish amount of rice.
