Overreactions about kitchen appliances. I didn't know rice cookers were made for anyone except people who need to cook lots of rice. Apparently, race is involved in it.

That shit was funny.

Only Asian people eat rice, apparently.

"Don’t waste your time finding white vegan “uses” for rice cookers like “steaming seitan sausage.” They weren’t made for that. They were made to feed families. And maybe you should think before you so callously dismiss something that might be important to somebody else."

Well, no, they weren't made to steam seitan sausages, they were made to cook rice. But if someone finds it useful for steaming sausages, why are they "wasting time" by doing that? Why is it a waste of time to use an appliance for something other than its intended purpose? And using your rice cooker for sausage isn't hurting the person who uses theirs for rice.

Oh, and the person who is steaming sausage might be doing that to feed their family too. "White vegans" have families who need to eat too.

I wonder what they'd say if I told them I use my Chinese roommate's chopsticks to stir drinks. Better or worse than kitchen appliance appropriation by the white, radical, vegan, New England queers?

I wonder what they would say about my using my own chopsticks to stir drinks? Especially when I never use chopsticks and only end up with them in xmas hampers of Asian and Indian themes?

I have strong feelings about rice. When I first started living on my own, I struggled over how much rice to buy to feed only one person. At my home in San Francisco, we have a 50 pound bag that just gets replaced whenever it runs out. I had to google how to cook rice in a pot, because at home we used the rice cooker.

such a brave soul, enduring the struggle of googling how to heat water

Any amount of rice can feed one person, dude! It's just a matter of how long it will feed them for. Get the big bag anyway!
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

I think I kind of invalidate that person's point. Rice cookers are just as ubiquitous to me as they are to them... But, I'm white, so clearly I have never seen a rice cooker before and have no idea what it's for or what it does or HOW SERIOUS BIZ THOSE THINGS ARE.

Rice cookers are made for... Rice. There is no human demographic in mind. They are manufactured so rice can be put in them. People who want to take cooked rice out of them and eat it will buy them. They will do this because cooking rice on the stove is a pain in the ass.

That person wouldn't like me. I'm white, I live alone, and I use my rice cooker all the freaking time. Sometimes when I'm cooking something I just want some rice with it. Sometimes I just eat rice alone. I like the taste of rice.

"I HAVE STRONG FEELINGS ABOUT RICE!" is going to be the phrase of the day I think.

I HAVE STRONG FEELINGS ABOUT PIZZA! Namely, I wish I could afford some, because I'm hungry.

I use a rice cooker to cook rice to feed my white family! What now?!

Oh for fuck's sake.

Guess I'd better go tell my Asian mother to use her rice cooker for herself and not to make any rice for my white stepdad because he'll be shitting all over our heritage by eating food that's just a common diet staple. Or something.

I mean, there are legitimate issues of cultural appropriation that could be addressed and people are freaking out over bullshit like THIS????

So when you, young 20s, New England living, white, radical queers cannot find a use for a rice cooker, maybe that is because rice cookers were not made for you.

That is a very odd mix of descriptors.

Also, OMG I need to check my privilege because I found that Roger Ebert comment the best part of the original FB screencap.

Why don't people just put a lid on the pot of rice instead of cooking it on the stove forever?

HAH, irresistible-revolution agreed with the post. My favorite nutjob.

though the original question was dumb too. It's in the title dude; you use rice cookers to cook rice.
