Or, That moment when you realized "hey, this show is actually awful"

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
How about shows that you heard/thought/expected to be great only eventually had to admit to yourself that it just wasn't for you/was really awful?

What was the breaking point? When did you realize that show was awful and stop hoping for it to get better?

Sherlock. I gave up when ep 1 of season 3 came out because I realised I just didn't care anymore. I don't quite know what the breaking point was but it was sometime in season 2, though there were already several things I didn't like about the first season.

I also can't bring myself to continue watching Supernatural because I'm really tired of the Winchesters and their constant emotional turmoil. These dudes are a complete trainwreck.

I gave up on Sherlock for the same reason. And I tried Supernatural for about a dozen episodes before Dean's schtick annoyed me too much to continue.

Also Sherlock, and I gave up in series 2. I was so excited for the new episodes, was underwhelmed by the first and totally disappointed by the second.

I gave up on Sherlock within the first half of the second episode of season 1. I still watched the rest of season 1 and 2, but only so that I could know what I was talking about and discuss the show properly.

Yeah, A Study in Pink is pretty much the only episode I liked. And even that I retroactively like less now because it established ideas that were okay or interesting then but blossomed into patterns I despised.

I don't know how I skimmed over this comment when I first when through this thread, but yeah. Same.

And I don't know if it applies for you, but I know part of my distaste for the series sprung from my growing Moffat dislike and that a lot of his Sherlock elements appear in Doctor Who and vice versa. A lot of things that seemed original in the first season and at least fun-ish in the second, felt stale and forced by the time season three finally aired.

Also (including?) Sherlock's dramatic death scene. My God! If you're going to write something like that into every single goddamn finale you come up with, at least make it count!

Smallville. Witches. Full stop.

I watched the Smallville pilot and thought it was one of the most flail-inducing adaptations of a superhero comic book character I had ever seen. Not super good or anything, but so much fun and so creative!

Then I realized about five episodes later that the pilot was the high point of the show by far. I skipped around watching episodes from other seasons and asked online to make sure it wasn't just a first-season thing, but sadly no. It was all crud. :(

I think I watched the first season and mostly liked it, but then I went to college and didn't have time to watch it anymore. I've kind of been wanting to finish it, but maybe not...

Yep. I'd heard so much great stuff about Smallville, I figured as a Superman fan I'd definitely enjoy it, and like you, I dug the pilot. After that, I managed to make it through the first season with grim determination and sheer will, but that was all I had in me.

This. I bailed after the first season. The 'Kryptonite monster of the week' combined with Clark just letting them die got to be too much.

The fourth season of Being Human (UK). Spoilers obviously, but it took Annie standing around in a fire looking for a recently dead baby's ghost, a bunch of actors who can't act, and the characters of those I started watching for in the first place having moved on to better things, was when I realised I was choking the show down at that point.

I'm just going to be over here with my fingers in my ears and refusing to acknowledge anything past the first season.

I watched 3 seasons of Being Human to see if it would ever start being good. I wish I could get that time back.

I keep having this moment over and over again with Supernatural. Tried it when it first came out, ended up laughing through the pilot and rolling my eyes through several episodes. Watched again later when Felicia Day guest starred and loved the ep so tried watching others and nope. Nope nope nope. That show is awful or just not for me.

New Girl. Although I wouldn't call it awful so much as... lacking in purpose. Also, it failed the Bechdel test.

Also, Happy Endings, though in my defense the first season was pretty good; I still maintain that the showrunners not knowing whether or not it was going to be cancelled killed it, which of course caused it to be cancelled anyway. It was always too busy teetering to really go anywhere. And like New Girl, it usually flunked the Bechdel Test, even though half the main cast was female.

Once Upon a Time. The pacing was super drawn-out and then rushed at the end of season one, but not terrible. Season two started off with a lot of promise, but quickly became I trainwreck.

I knew I wasn't coming back for season three when they took all of Regina's development and made her evil again. (And from what I hear, now she's not? IDEK.)

Legend of Korra, took till the beginning of the second season. I was pretty okay with the first season, it obviously had it problems but I still enjoyed certain elements of it and I was hopeful for the second season. But I just couldn't get into anymore. Maybe it was sudden decline of animation or the weird pacing but I just wasn't enjoying it anymore. : /
It's a real shame, because I was so excited for Korra. Aw well.

I was young and foolish once, and actually enjoyed Big Bang Theory in its first few seasons. I don't remember the exact point, maybe when I realized how terrible Penny/Leonard is.

I know this will probably be unpopular, but Fringe. Everyone told me I'd love it, even though I am in no way a fan of J.J. Mad scientists! Sci-fi! Good acting and so on! But I hated it. The first season was okay, but there were plot-lines that just made no fucking sense, and it only got worse in the second season. Half the episodes were incredibly stupid. Stuff was going on with Walter and Peter that made no sense considering what came previously. Around the middle of season two I just lost all motivation to continue watching, and never went back.

I'm usually aware when something I'm watching is not the best, but sometimes it takes time to admit something is not as entertaining.

Weeds got horrible, I still maintain it had an amazing start and it was one of those that I finished just to see how it ends. I also feel the same about Dexter.

Once Upon A Time lost whatever it had going for it, it's always been cheese but now I feel like I have to force myself to watch it.

And there was even a time I liked Glee, but really only for the first half of the first season. I don't think Ryan Murphy ever expected it to go anywhere (didn't it premiere during the summer in a really bad time slot?) so it was obvious there was no plan after that and the further it went on the more of a MESS it became. My friends also drove me nuts about it because they refused to see the downfall and it took them a lot longer to ditch it and stop bugging me about it.

I couldn't finish watching Pitch Perfect after realising that I disliked most of the main characters or found them hugely unsympathetic and was made massively uncomfortable by the bathroom scene that would have been protested against so much more if the girl doing the cornering had been a man.

In my youth, I was really, really, really into Highlander: The Series. (Yes, I know.) I hung on after they started making stupid fan theories canon, I hung on after they started making stupid fan JOKES canon, I hung on far too long, in hindsight.

Then they did the arc where they killed Richie and Duncan did the single least interesting hero-turns-evil bit ever and Methos fixed him with a magic hot tub and I suddenly realized I had no actual idea why I was watching this show any more. So I stopped.

I'm having this moment about Supernatural these days. I've been a faithful watcher since Season 1, so I'm fighting it, but I'm getting awfully tired of... well. Everything, really. I think Kevin is what did it for me--he was my favorite of the new(er) characters, and now that he's gone, I've lost all desire to keep watching. I feel like there's nothing new and interesting to keep me attached. If I wanted to see Sam and Dean angst at each other while Crowley makes snarky comments and Castiel pops in and out, I'd watch the first five seasons again.

About six minutes into episode one of Ouran High School Host Club.

I wanted to like it because my best friend reced it to me, but pretty much as soon as I started watching it, my reaction was 'but every single one of these characters is a horrible person! I can't watch this!'

I probably should've given it a real chance, but there was no way it was ever going to happen. Said best friend was miffed for ages about this, I guess she wanted us to enjoy it together. Well, at least we both enjoyed Madoka.
