Uh, I actually agree with the comic, and most of the comments? On the point that people's obsession with the 'authenticity' regarding 'ethnic food' is usually ridiculous, at least.
For example, if I go to a Japanese restaurant with someone who isn't Japanese, and they're super hung up on eating the food 'properly', because it's authentic, I just find it kind of weird- and this has happened to me several times. If you're really into sushi etiquette and Japanese culture, that's cool, but the authentic part of it makes no sense to me. They give more of a crap about that kind of thing than my family that is Japanese does.
(Even worse, is when someone non-Japanese tries to school me on how to eat the food "properly", because they don't know that I'm half Japanese. Annoys me so fucking much.)

Me too.

I'm thinking most people commenting here didn't bother to read it and just inserted their favorite crazy tumblr opinion.

Shit's lame, people.

Yeah, I'm kind of getting the feeling that most people here didn't actually read the comic and think it's saying something else

I agree with you.

The comic makes a good point, and it's not about appropriation at all. If anything it's about people neurotically trying to not "appropriate" and coming across like idiots as a result.

I think the point of the comic went over everyone's head. I guess being offended is funner.

I don't know, I always thought of that sort of thing as wanting to show a basic respect for the other culture. Like, if eating a particular dish a certain way is considered rude or inappropriate in the culture which it comes from, that's the sort of thing I like to know so that I don't end up coming across as ignorant or rude. It's less that I'm trying to be 'authentic' and more that I'm trying to be respectful by honoring the traditions and etiquette of that country.

I also think there's nothing wrong with wanting to show respect to another culture. Like in Japanese table etiquette it's considered pretty rude to stick your chopsticks into your food, and if you looked that up and tried not to do that if you were eating with Japanese people, it would just be basic courtesy on your part.
I'm talking about people who are hung up on "authenticity", like you have to hold the bowl this way, or you have to hold your chopsticks this way, and you have to eat the food in this order, and it has to be prepared this way. Seriously, who cares. It's not impolite, or 'bastardizing' the culture if you don't do it. Like if you want to do it because you have an interest in the traditional culture, sure, but it's not like it's giving you enlightened authenticity points, or some amazing insight on the culture.

"YOU HAVE TO LOUDLY SLURP YOUR SOUP - IT'S RUDE NOT TO!"

Hell no, I have spent a good part of my childhood being told again and again that I must not under any circumstances slurp soup so I damn well won't start with it now, no matter how ~authentic~ it might be. (It's also terribly messy if you don't do it properly.)
