I don't know if I just suck at British humor (?) but I didn't like this movie. It was too serious in its horror (with characters' violent deaths) to be remotely funny to me. I can't laugh if I just feel shitty about what's happening to them/ And not... funny enough to be funny, either. Then again, I heard it's funnier if you know a lot about the zombie movie genre, and I don't really like zombie movies in general.

It's horror-comedy. Meaning the comedy parts are often going to be really, really dark. (Like the killing the zombies while using records bit.) If you aren't into horror-comedy than this movie isn't for you. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Interesting.

I really like the juxtaposition of comedy and seriousness in movies like this. Somehow, for me, the change in tone makes the serious bits that much more affecting. I also like the fact that I get to experience such a wide range of emotions in a single film.

I don't know anything about zombie movies, it's definitely the humor. Wouldn't say it's a British humor issue either, just a black humor issue.

That doesn't sound like a British humor issue as much as a dark comedy issue. Dark comedies require being okay with seriously bad things happening to characters and being able to see the humor in it.

Being a fan of zombie movies also helps, Wright/Pegg/Frost movies tend to be pretty direct parodies of whatever genre they're going for so you while I don't think you need to be an expert in the genre it's good to at least be familiar with it.

Knowledge of zombie movie cliches certainly helps, as well as an acquaintance with British humor. Shaun of the Dead is one of the best horror-comedy films and is very well balanced between the two genres (unlike, say, Zombieland, which, imo, fails to achieve that balance). If you don't like zombie movies, I can see why you wouldn't like it as an appreciation for genre is a must-have for this to be enjoyable.

I actually liked Zombieland. lol To be honest, I even consider(ed?) myself to be pretty fond of dark comedy, but I don't know. I guess I had trouble transferring emotions - if a death is portrayed as violent, horrible and sad, it's hard for me to start laughing again two minutes later. If the violence is portrayed as humorous, it's another thing.

I realize I'm in the minority of not liking Shaun of the Dead. I guess "horror comedy" is a fair genre, but when I was watching it, I couldn't figure out what it was trying to do, because it seemed like two opposites trying to collide.

Honestly, I much prefer Zombieland, because I thought it maintained a much more consistent tone throughout the movie, whereas with Shaun of the Dead the majority of the movie was relatively good dark comedy, but then it suddenly hits the final act where suddenly everything goes to complete shit and people get ripped apart and the tonal shift to straight-up horror really shook me and ruined the movie a bit for me.

It's not for everyone. I liked it because it was a pretty good zombie movie that got a large part of its humor out of the same sorts of things that horrify in straight zombie movies, which is a neat trick. But then, I tend to like horror comedy a little better than regular horror movies; if I'm going to get nightmares later I might as well have a laugh now.
