[Shaun of the Dead]

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that he's an awesome person, it's more that Shaun lost his best friend. That's why I found it so sad.

I love the movie and the character, but I have to agree. He was just an asshole.

I don't know if I just suck at British humor (?) but I didn't like this movie. It was too serious in its horror (with characters' violent deaths) to be remotely funny to me. I can't laugh if I just feel shitty about what's happening to them/ And not... funny enough to be funny, either. Then again, I heard it's funnier if you know a lot about the zombie movie genre, and I don't really like zombie movies in general.

It's horror-comedy. Meaning the comedy parts are often going to be really, really dark. (Like the killing the zombies while using records bit.) If you aren't into horror-comedy than this movie isn't for you. And there's nothing wrong with that.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting.

I really like the juxtaposition of comedy and seriousness in movies like this. Somehow, for me, the change in tone makes the serious bits that much more affecting. I also like the fact that I get to experience such a wide range of emotions in a single film.

I don't know anything about zombie movies, it's definitely the humor. Wouldn't say it's a British humor issue either, just a black humor issue.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't sound like a British humor issue as much as a dark comedy issue. Dark comedies require being okay with seriously bad things happening to characters and being able to see the humor in it.

Being a fan of zombie movies also helps, Wright/Pegg/Frost movies tend to be pretty direct parodies of whatever genre they're going for so you while I don't think you need to be an expert in the genre it's good to at least be familiar with it.

Knowledge of zombie movie cliches certainly helps, as well as an acquaintance with British humor. Shaun of the Dead is one of the best horror-comedy films and is very well balanced between the two genres (unlike, say, Zombieland, which, imo, fails to achieve that balance). If you don't like zombie movies, I can see why you wouldn't like it as an appreciation for genre is a must-have for this to be enjoyable.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I actually liked Zombieland. lol To be honest, I even consider(ed?) myself to be pretty fond of dark comedy, but I don't know. I guess I had trouble transferring emotions - if a death is portrayed as violent, horrible and sad, it's hard for me to start laughing again two minutes later. If the violence is portrayed as humorous, it's another thing.

I realize I'm in the minority of not liking Shaun of the Dead. I guess "horror comedy" is a fair genre, but when I was watching it, I couldn't figure out what it was trying to do, because it seemed like two opposites trying to collide.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I much prefer Zombieland, because I thought it maintained a much more consistent tone throughout the movie, whereas with Shaun of the Dead the majority of the movie was relatively good dark comedy, but then it suddenly hits the final act where suddenly everything goes to complete shit and people get ripped apart and the tonal shift to straight-up horror really shook me and ruined the movie a bit for me.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's not for everyone. I liked it because it was a pretty good zombie movie that got a large part of its humor out of the same sorts of things that horrify in straight zombie movies, which is a neat trick. But then, I tend to like horror comedy a little better than regular horror movies; if I'm going to get nightmares later I might as well have a laugh now.

Wasn't the point of his character to show how modern humans are really no different from zombies? At the beginning, he was a gross, lazy couch potato who played video games all day. And when he became a zombie nothing about his lifestyle changed.

You're not supposed to care or feel sad about how he ended up. You're supposed to try and avoid that fate.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
This is a very astute analysis.

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2014-02-22 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. That was kind of the point of the movie.
replicantangel: (boomstick!)

[personal profile] replicantangel 2014-02-22 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think that was a large part of the point, so I agree.

I also think that up until the last bit, he's been a selfish jerk who only contributes by buying/selling weed - hardly what matters in the zombie apocalypse. But in the end, he does step up and shows that he actually *does* care. He defends Barbra (and Shaun), even though they all know that she's turning. He volunteers to be the one freaking EATEN, because they have only 2 slugs for 3 people. And he stays behind to give Shaun and Liz a chance to escape.

He's a good person when he's forced to be. It's just easier for him to be dumb and a sponge. Also - Shaun needs the counterpart to his straight-man.

Actually, I think you're supposed to be relieved that he's 'survived' and pleased that Shaun hasn't lost his friend.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to have trouble not loving Nick Frost characters because he's extremely endearing, but even if you didn't like Ed I would still think you'd feel sad when he died because of how it effected Shaun. In particular at that point in the movie they're being completely overrun, Shaun lost many people he knew and his mother and is at the point of losing all hope.

Exactly. Poor Shaun. (Not that anyone deserves to die that way, so I still felt bad for Ed.)

I'll feel bad for Shaun. Losing your best friend and everyone you know would be rough. Ed's life didn't change at all so no feels for him.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
The way it happened, it wasn't sad but for a minute and then you saw that their friendship endured the zombiism. That's...not what you mean, but that's why I don't think it's too sad.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
This movie actually cured me of my fear of zombies (well, mostly). I was horrified by one of the character's deaths (the one that happened right before the climactic fight), but other than that I genuinely enjoyed myself. Zombieland helped in that regard as well. /lolno1curr
