Kind of want to get into knitting. I always need something to do with my hands when they would otherwise be idle (like when watching a TV show) so I think I'd like that. Haven't really had the time to shop for things though.

You don't need too much to get started. Some cheap yarn in a pretty color and a set of needles somewhere in the middle of the range of sizes. You can knit on that for a long time until you get the hang of it. Also, http://www.knittinghelp.com/

Yeah, I know. That's what I need to shop for :p Thanks for the link though!

If you do decide to get into it, I found the tutorials on this website to be super useful.

TV time is my prime knitting time! Is there anything specific you'd like to know? I probably can't tell you much about specific materials or where to find them because I don't know what availability is like where you are, but I might be able to answer a couple "getting started" questions if you have them.

Thank you! I already have my first few steps planned but if I ever get stuck, I might make a thread here and ask for help seeing how many responses I got with just one casually made comment!

Do it! I got into it for the same exact reasons. The main challenge is the initial first week or so because you have to focus on the knitting itself and not the TV show you're trying to multi-task with, but after that it's awesome.

And yeah, all you really need is a single ball of yarn and some needles (usually about $10 USD combined over here). I'd say begin with a scarf first, but not sure how much those are of use where you live if I'm remembering correctly...

Haha a scarf would definitely see no use over here, but it's okay, I'll start with making one anyway. I'm going to Washington DC this time next month so maybe I'll go armed with a deformed, badly knitted scarf!

www.knittinghelp.com has some great videos. I was taught the basic knit and purl stitches and one cast on and cast off in person but everything else I taught myself from the internet. If you get started and have any trouble you can feel free to message me. I've taught several people now.

I second knitting help, it's where I learned how to bind off (my grandmother started me with basic stitches and then left me on my own. Without telling me how to finish, d'oh)

Aww that's not good. When I did the first lesson with each of my friends I made sure to show them how to cast on and bind off so they would have all the basic tools to do some experimenting on their own when I was gone. Good thing you figured it out.

I think it was more she didn't expect me to finish that fast. I started Thanksgiving weekend with her and I was going to see her two weeks later after final exams were over. I just happened to be really bored and finished it fast.

Everyone else has already given you good advice, so let me add a few things:

1. If you have a local yarn store, they will usually be extremely happy to answer any kind of question you have, and often have either pay classes or free show-up-and-knit circle events. Those are great resources for beginning knitters, because if you just can't understand how a stitch goes, or can't figure something out, a more experienced knitter will likely be able to help you.

2. For the love of God, pick a quick thing for your first project. I hate the fact that the canonical starter project is a scarf, because they take forever and I find them boring as hell if you're not doing a pattern. It's easy to get discouraged when you've been working on something for what seems like forever and don't have much to show for it--that's why I stopped knitting for years as a young teen. Honestly, if you have a good support group, get someone to teach you how to use circular needles and make a hat, it's quicker and also teaches you some extra skills like decreases and double-points without being substantially harder.

Thank you for all that! Unfortunately knitting is not exactly a thing here (sewing being much bigger*) so I don't have access to a support group or anything. I'll probably be buying yarn from the arts and crafts section of Popular or something (that's a bookstore. Not sure if Popular exists abroad). I myself want to start with a scarf because I've heard it's easy? Just for me to get used to doing it. However, if I do face a problem with boredom, I'll definitely keep that in mind!

*Speaking of which, I think my mum - and my grandmother, and my great-grandmother - would much prefer it if I took that up. They're all certified tailoresses (seamstresses? But that always makes me think of prostitutes) but you can't exactly lug a sewing machine onto the bus!

The good part about knitting a scarf is that it is dead simple and EXTREMELY hard to screw up badly enough that the whole project is ruined. You've got one stitch, it can be done on nice thick straight needles, and it doesn't really matter if you drop or add a stitch on accident.

My problem with scarves is when I realize that I essentially have to knit a piece of cloth that's five feet long by however wide. I usually got about two feet in before saying "this is the most boring shit ever, why am I doing this" and starting something more interesting. This is why my last 5 projects have either been mittens, baby hats, normal person hats, or small stuffed animals and yet I have never finished a scarf. If you're planning on mostly knitting while watching TV, scarves may be your speed as you won't have to look at the needles much once you get the hang of it, and the boredom will be less of a problem.

Also, if sewing is bigger where you are, have you considered needlepoint? I was heavily into that during my teens, and there are kits that are largely self-contained, portable, and often quite nice looking. The instructions also tend to be clear and understandable.
