Re: Is there anything you would like to get involved in?
1. If you have a local yarn store, they will usually be extremely happy to answer any kind of question you have, and often have either pay classes or free show-up-and-knit circle events. Those are great resources for beginning knitters, because if you just can't understand how a stitch goes, or can't figure something out, a more experienced knitter will likely be able to help you.
2. For the love of God, pick a quick thing for your first project. I hate the fact that the canonical starter project is a scarf, because they take forever and I find them boring as hell if you're not doing a pattern. It's easy to get discouraged when you've been working on something for what seems like forever and don't have much to show for it--that's why I stopped knitting for years as a young teen. Honestly, if you have a good support group, get someone to teach you how to use circular needles and make a hat, it's quicker and also teaches you some extra skills like decreases and double-points without being substantially harder.
Re: Is there anything you would like to get involved in?
*Speaking of which, I think my mum - and my grandmother, and my great-grandmother - would much prefer it if I took that up. They're all certified tailoresses (seamstresses? But that always makes me think of prostitutes) but you can't exactly lug a sewing machine onto the bus!
Re: Is there anything you would like to get involved in?
My problem with scarves is when I realize that I essentially have to knit a piece of cloth that's five feet long by however wide. I usually got about two feet in before saying "this is the most boring shit ever, why am I doing this" and starting something more interesting. This is why my last 5 projects have either been mittens, baby hats, normal person hats, or small stuffed animals and yet I have never finished a scarf. If you're planning on mostly knitting while watching TV, scarves may be your speed as you won't have to look at the needles much once you get the hang of it, and the boredom will be less of a problem.
Also, if sewing is bigger where you are, have you considered needlepoint? I was heavily into that during my teens, and there are kits that are largely self-contained, portable, and often quite nice looking. The instructions also tend to be clear and understandable.
