I knew it was going to be a stretch but...

-Jasmine doesn't have female handmaidens

-The Sultan changes the law so Jasmine can marry Aladdin

...that's it. That's the argument? (also, a bonus rant about Frozen "whitewashing" those Scandinavians, lol)

Oh, and something about Jasmine's tiger. The tiger means she's trans.

Because they both begin with T! Obviously.

That argument is more compelling than anything I gleaned from that tumblr post!

Nah, it's because the tiger is male and when Jafar "sexualizes" Jasmine, his first move is to weaken her male guardian by turning him into a kitten.

Which totally misses the point that said tiger had, right before that, been defending Jasmine.

I think she's saying the tiger's a metaphorical penis...

I think she's saying that the big tiger (euphemism) gets shrunk down into a little tiger (euphemism).

Also contains a bonus mention about how Maleficient was totes gay. Everybody knows the first gay Disney character was Le Fou.

Haha oh yeah. I haven't seen Sleeping Beauty in forever, but vividly recall Maleficient making that prince her sex slave. or something like that. but hey, I'm a lesbian and Maleficient could totally do me, so no hurt feelings.

Mal is hot and has the sexiest voice in the movie.

I am 99% sure that my attraction to powerful women who enjoy chaining me up and wearing a lot of black comes from the dozens of times I watched Sleeping Beauty as a five year old.

The first gay Disney character was the Cupid bird in the short "Who Killed Cock Robin?," if you're genuinely curious. He's gay in the Hays Code sense, much like the Reluctant Dragon, who arrived on the scene six years later.

I can definitely believe that Le Fou was gay, now that you mention it.

I just googled that and watched it, and a few other symphonies. The thirties were a lot more blatant than I realized.

Somebody pointed out the lyrics: "You can ask any Tom, Dick, or Stanley, and they'll tell you whose team they prefer to be ooooooooooon." Even the guys want Gaston.

Thomas was the next gay character. Less of a jerkass, but the little brat did kill Kocoum.

Flounder was confused.

Disney does not have a good track record here.

Excuse me that is erasure, Disney's first lesbian couple predates Le Fou by an entire generation.

Yeah, Marian left her for a tod in the end but that was pretty much the norm in lesbian fiction of the era.

Further proof:
- Lady Kluck is a chicken and Marian is a fox, what do foxes do to chickens, hmmm?
- Badminton is one of the top five most lesbian sports.
- They are wearing pink and blue, obviously code for the butch/femme dynamic.

Well, yeah that's obvious but this was Disney in the 70s. This movie was originally going to be about the trickster Reynard, but they made it Robin Hood because idk, Reynard wasn't family-friendly enough. You think they could fathom a relationship between two women ~~of different species~~ that didn't somehow reflect heterosexist norms*?

* Of course, lesbians invented the butch/femme dynamic and straight people stole it from us but Disney was reinforcing the opposite belief.

What she's referring to is the misuse of Sami iconography in the film. Whitewashing is probably the wrong term because Sami would be considered to be white too but they have been historically mistreated by other Scandinavians and as I understand still face oppression.

I myself am of Norwegian descent and realy didn't know most of this until the film came out and Sami people started talking about their issues with it.

But also as a Trans Woman... heh, I really don't think the tumblr post makes a compelling argument at all. An interesting one and if she wants to write a fic on it that could be interesting, but anything like the lack of Eunuchs and such I feel is just Disney not wanting to touch that subject.

Sami are indigenous of Finland, not Norway. And they are white. I have never heard a Sami person complaining about this film, only tumblr SJWs. The character Kristof (sp?) is apparently inspired by Sami in terms of clothing, but it's all a fictional kingdom so kind of irrelevant.

kristoff isn't inspired, he is supposed to be saami. jennifer lee confirmed it and it's in the screenplay.

I did see a couple posts by Sami people who had a couple of qualms with the way their traditional clothing was being represented (on both Anna and Kristof, apparently also the Reindeer thing is a big part of Sami culture), but even they were far from calling for a boycott of the film, merely taking the opportunity to make some of their grievances known.

At least from what I saw.

I'm Norwegian, and I got quite a shock the other day when one of my friends told me that Kristoff is based of a photo of a Norwegian Sami who's friends with her father. He himself was very exited to see the movie.
