I should check this out. I had a crippling fear of dogs until I got a cat, oddly enough, but I'm only at the point where I can deal with a) dogs on a leash that I walk past or b) dogs that I have been properly introduced to.

If I see a strange, unleashed dog of any type or size I have to fight my flight instinct very hard. I was once approached by someone walking her unleashed dog in the middle of the night while I was fumbling with my door lock and was already nervous, and I seriously just ran. Luckily the dog and human were perfectly normal people who probably side-eyed me and went on. But this happened when I was like, 23.

Yeah, I'm really scared of unleashed dogs, too. My heart starts hammering and my hands shake. My sister is really critical about it because we were raised with a lot of dogs but, I don't know, they scare me now.

Walking unleashed dogs outside of a dog park or completely deserted farmland or something would have made me side-eye them. Those dogs can run into a busy street, aggravate strange dogs, and scare people with or without phobias if they're too friendly/aggressive. You weren't the one being unreasonable there, IMO.

I'm a dog lover and I don't think you should walk your dog without a leash ESPECIALLY at night.

I can see hanging out in your front yard if your dog is reliable enough not to leave (my old dog couldn't run very far even if she wanted to), but walking into other peoples' spaces? Use a leash. It's both inconsiderate to people AND dangerous for the dog.

+2 if it's not a designated off-leash dog area it's very inconsiderate of others and unsafe for the dog. Don't feel bad anon :(
