Try harder next time, Tumblr. You're still the fucking worst thing that happened to the Internet and the worst shithole full of morons.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
you're describing Reddit and 4chan actually.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's actually f!s.

We're the worst thing to ever happen to the internet.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about Reddit, but 4chan can be an awesome place. It has some boards that are pure cancer, but there a lot of them that are great. Stop being a sheep.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Reddit has way more subreddits than 4chan has boards, so there's definitely some really good subreddits out there.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
The problem with 4chan is that there's really no way to block out the shitty stuff that gets posted, so it's easy to assume that people on there just go along with everyone else.

There's also the issue that so many of them still use 'sheep' as an insult.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't there a word filter extension?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'd like to agree, my personal 4chan favorite is their wallpapers (/wg/) board, least cancerous board there, still hints of cancer, but usually on topic and how I get most of my wallpapers.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
4chan is a shit place for fandom, the awesome people are few and far between, but I guess most of them would be awesome if you agree with all their views and share their sense of humor. It sucks being female on there too.

Tumblr isn't bad IF and that's a giant "if" you know where to stay clear from.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. You might have to sift through a lot of shitty corners of tumblr before you find the good stuff, but there are lots of good and intelligent people there. It's an adventure entering a new fandom and finding out the right group of people to follow, but they generally stick to the same circles and know who to ignore.

The trick to tumblr is to basically only use tags to find blogs that will fill your dash with stuff you like. Other than that just steer clear of the tags and remember to download extensions like tumblr savior or xkit to blacklist certain terms and block any SJW you frequently see and your pretty much in the clear.

Yeah it might be a lot of work, but I think it's worth it because tumblr has some of the best hub for fandoms to share infomation, fanwork, discussions, and writing meta. It's definitely worth at least giving a chance.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This. The general tags are usually mostly free of insanity.

Isn't that true of the internet in general? I always fail to see what makes Tumblr worse in that regard.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I'm confused about. It's just like any other social site, you add people you want to, you avoid stuff you know you don't like, you block people and blacklist things that you know will cause you problems.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I've been on tumblr for 2 or 3 years, follow some queer-positive, anti-racist and feminist people, and am yet to accidentally stumble into the snakepit of paranoia and speshul. I only see it when people link to it, and yeah that stuff can be pretty bad. Maybe it helps that I avoid anyone who seems really immature? IDK, but I am more irritated by the whiners who go on about how all of tumblr is this crazy pit of awareness of how straight, white and cis may not be the default state of being. Backlash is a usual strategy to push back.

I've got friends who intentionally go into snakepits and friends who accidentally stumble into snakepits but have yet to do it myself (that I'm aware of).

I mean I had an angry person ramble at me once but I'm not sure it was me they were rambling at since I had no idea who they were so I just blocked them and some minor RP drama and that's about as bad as it's gotten for me.

I found the Shakespeare fandom on Tumblr. It's massive quantities of slash shipping, well written fanfics, mad flailing about how [insert obscure name here] is a brilliant actor and oh so sexy, and intelligent discourse about dead words. And dick jokes, lots of dick jokes (but you have to know like three forms of English to get the dick jokes).
The rest of tumblr scares me, though.

Could I ask you for some blog recommendations? I need more Shakespeare in my life, and what you're talking about sounds like fun. :3

I like http://shakespearean.tumblr.com/ (shake & tumble) It's updated regularly about current and past performances of his plays as well as historical footnotes surrounding him and his works. No wank. Just lots of great info.

This.

I've never ran into an issue on Tumblr. But I don't go trawling around on SJ tags, or following those kinds of batshit blogs, because I know better.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The obnoxious behavior patterns on tumblr predate tumblr by a long shot. If you weren't seeing it before then, you just weren't looking in the right (wrong?) places.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of the people who think this stuff originated on Tumblr are either too young to have been in other fandom communities or nostalgic for wherever they have their fondest memories of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
You're highlighting the issue quite well. A website is not a person. A website did not create this secret. A website or community does not hold a single viewpoint on everything.
