Oh come now, it's not like you're checking out what my mother calls "trashy love novels". You know, the ones with a flower on the cover and titles like "Delectable". I used to get those from the library when I was a 12 year old and hide them in a stack of YA.

(On a completely unrelated note; I honestly think that this is why no one my age that I know of actually discovered ~dirty~ books from reading Flowers in the Attic. Me and my best friend rode out bikes about once a week to the library and just went for the hardcore smut. It's not like the librarians could stop us.)

I read "Flowers in the Attic" because my mother told me I wasn't old enough and I thought it was just a trashy romance novel. I was so horrified when I realized what it was.
(I don't know how I missed the blurb on the back and stuff. I was young and stupid, I guess.)

They could probably stop you, but it seems they really didn't give a shit, more like. We notice that kinda stuff, you know, we just pretend we don't.

AYRT

Well, as my mother says, "no bad book has ever turned a good girl bad".

I think the Spanish Inquisition would have disagreed with her as well as all the people they burned for reading the wrong books, but whatever, if she wants to believe books have no impact whatsoever in young minds in any way or form, let her.

Uh okay, you got the wrong impression. My mother meant it as, "if someone's going to go bad, it's not going to be a book that does it". And seriously, how often has a book been the one and only catalyst that lead to the "corruption" of anyone?

And...I'm sorry, are you insulting my mother while praising the Spanish inquisition? Cause you're sending some very mixed signals here.

This is a brilliant sentence, anon. :~D

FWIW, I agree with you and your mother.

How? We can only stop kids from getting movies or games that have a higher age limit than the kid's age.

For whatever reason, I already had trashy novels and my uncle's porn mags in my grandmother's house. My book rebellion were all Wiccan books. I remember at one point, the library was closing, my mom was giving me hell about what I was checking out, and the clerk actually put in a good word for me.

my friend and i checked out huge stacks of cosmos at that age and told the librarians they were for our older sisters lmao
