Oh come now, it's not like you're checking out what my mother calls "trashy love novels". You know, the ones with a flower on the cover and titles like "Delectable". I used to get those from the library when I was a 12 year old and hide them in a stack of YA.

(On a completely unrelated note; I honestly think that this is why no one my age that I know of actually discovered ~dirty~ books from reading Flowers in the Attic. Me and my best friend rode out bikes about once a week to the library and just went for the hardcore smut. It's not like the librarians could stop us.)

I used to be so self-conscious about buying manga and didn't want be a disgusting weeaboo, but eventually I went to the bookstore enough I that I realized that the workers don't really care if they're not into it and are more than happy to take your money.

I find that funny because not long ago I borrowed a depressing 19th century Finnish book and I felt really uncomfortable about it so I hid it under a comic book.

Just remember, librarians (just like cashiers, mailmen, other people at the gym, and that one guy who saw you trip) don't give a shit about you. You are just one person in a line of dozens of others. Just don't show your private parts and/or do anything illegal, and no one cares.

Self-checkouts are an amazing thing, anon. If your library doesn't have them you should ask if they're budgeting for one anytime soon. :)

In the meantime don't sweat it too much! The vast majority of librarians are in favor of as little censorship as possible and try not to make moral judgements about what you read.

I feel you, OP. I get kind of embarrassed about it, too. It's stupid but I feel a deep down sense of guilt that I'm not reading "grown up" literature even if the manga I read isn't made for kids. But it's a stupid social hang up and we should work on it because if you can't enjoy life, what the fuck are you doing with yourself?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
With the amount of weird shit I read/request at the library, I think if any of the librarians ever had the urge to comment, they long ago gave it up as a lost cause. I've been a member since I was seven, and my parents gave the library written permission to let me check out books from the adult section when I was twelve or so. I think at that point they basically just decided 'on her head be it, then' and none of them so much as bat an eye anymore. I've checked out everything from Russian history to trashy romance to gorey serial killers to baking to a manga I suspect they didn't realise was as soft-core porny as it was (being fair, I didn't realise this until afterwards either), and quite a few of those since my early teens.

If any of them originally gave a shit, I suspect they gave it up as a bad job long since.

My mother is a librarian and the only time she mentioned something her patrons have lent was the time a deaf man who she can't really understand properly lent a book about hemmeroids and then spent 5 minutes talking about it. Unless you pull something like that they won't care.

self-checkouts?

Though that just makes me think about self-checkouts at the grocery store, and the woman who freaked out at me being behind her when she was buying a pregnancy test even though we are.. obviously? monitoring everything you scan?? You just need to accept that even if people in customer service are noticing you, it's extremely unlikely you are even the strangest thing they've seen that day. Hey, maybe you are the one less boring moment in the crushing monotony of their afternoon. You're a gift!

As someone working the check-out desk, I can tell you:

a)We see a lot worse than manga, in any direction you care to go with that,

b)We really don't care. Really. We don't.

and a bonus c)I have squee'd with patrons over the manga they're checking out. For all you know, the person on the other side of the desk is just as big of a dork as you.

Hahahahaha I do this too except with comic books instead of manga. I also try to find editions of comic books that have covers that look less...comic-book-y and colorful and more ~mature. It's idiotic but it's pretty deeply engrained and I haven't been able to shake it off yet.

How do you know the person checking you out isn't a fan too? Even if they don't get it, they don't have to. I wouldn't be too self-conscious about it; I'm sure those guys see a little of everything and manga isn't particularly shocking or shameful or anything.

The point of libraries is to allow people free access to all sorts of media. So go enjoy it all.

Trust me, the people at the check-out don't care wtf you're checking out as long as you're not doing stuff to make their life more difficult. Which I think can be said about most jobs.

Ah, Godchild. Back in the day I loved that manga. And I still love Kaori Yuki's drawing style. So pretty (even if sometimes the characters have broken fingers. Fingers don't normally work that way.)

As a library employee...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally assume the people checking out the comics and manga are better than most of the rest.

Granted, I also work for a university library, not a public one.

I was self-conscious about liking manga in middle school, though I'm not sure why. I certainly wasn't the only one in my school who did and we lived in Asia. Manga was freakin' everywhere.

When I was 15 I did freak out and hid a yaoi manga I wanted under a pile of different books when my dad said he'd pay for them all.

manga in libraries?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I am jealous of your library having manga. But then, I live in a tiny town that is lucky to have a library at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't freaking care. I'm a grown woman and I'll shamelessly check out comics or manga or trashy romance novels* or whatever I feel like from the library.

*I don't really care for those, but if I did I'd check them out.

Meanwhile, I had to give up on borrowing manga from my library because a) half of it was in the children/teen's section, which was closed every fucking time but once I went there, and b) the ones in the adult section were always missing volumes and I could never finish the series (granted, same with the Vertigo comics like Sandman). I'm still kinda mad, years later. They never gave me a chance to be embarrassed to give them to the librarian. In the end, I just read the short 4-5 volume ones inside the library itself if I was lucky to find it whole.

I wish I could give you more reassurance, but when I bought a book in a certain YA series that's popular with teenage girls, the cashier gave me the most contemptuous look, and as he was ringing it up he made a point to catch the eye of the cashier next to him and direct her gaze towards said book so she could join him in judging me. I already had the fear of getting all sorts of books, and that proved me justified.

At least my library has self checkout services.
