When I was seven my parents took me to some convention where they had a rock climbing wall. I convinced my mother to sign her name on the permission slip and scrambled up that wall like a squirrel.

When I was thirteen I climbed a waterfall.

When I was sixteen I stopped waiting for boys to ask me out and started asking them out.

When I was seventeen I joined the Army Reserves.

When I was twenty-six I got on a plane, went to a writer's conference, and convinced a literary agent to look at my manuscript. She eventually turned it down, but she did say that it was fast-paced, had interesting characters and a strong voice. I'm pretty sure I'll eventually get an agent.

When I was twenty-seven I moved more than eight hours away from my parents and everyone I knew to a new state for a job.

Teal Deer: I'm awesome. :)

When I was eight-ish, I convinced my best friend that my imaginary world was real and that I could fly and become invisible whenever I wanted.

She had believed me up until the fifth form. I told her all sorts of stuff about this place, I invented three different planets, nine countries, seventy-four species of animals and twenty species of plants. I invented an imaginary language. I also told her that I had a spaceship and could travel in space. And that I didn't really need to breathe in order to survive. Also, sometimes I pretended to be one of my (imaginary) sisters who happened to look just like me; for this purpose, I changed my mannerisms and even my voice.

Good God, this was all sorts of fucked up. But I honestly meant no malice. It was just fun.

Among other things, I had once (illegally) spent a night at school.

I pet tigers at a Buddhist temple in Thailand. Which sounds really cool, but the establishment gave me a kind of skeevy feeling, and after the fact I heard there had been allegations against the monks there for abusing the cats and being irresponsible with their care/purchase/letting tourists hug them. Which made me feel really bad, though of course the temple denies all of this and insists they have the animals' conservation in mind, and use donations to help fund tiger charities (?) etc. Still kind of suspicious though.

But I have a cool picture of me with a sleepy tiger's head in my lap, at a Buddhist temple. So that's kinda cool.

While in Japan, I did "Shukubo" (stayed the night at a temple). The place I stayed was a Shinto shrine. My girlfriend and I woke up at 5 a.m. to go hiking through the mountains with the priest, and did "takigyo" (waterfall meditation). Like, standing under a small waterfall chanting and meditating. It was fucking cold. But also cool to think about.. especially in retrospect.

A couple zebras stuck their heads in my window and I pet them. Pretty cool. I can say I pet a fucking zebra. Like a boss.

8-year-old me was riding a brakeless bike down a steep slope and took a sharp turn to avoid something on the road (I don't remember what it was, everything happened so quickly), and of course I fell flat on my face, but I lived to tell the tale and got two kickass facial scars as a reward (for not dying I guess)

Look at the fluffy little baby!

My stories are never impressive but more of the, "Oh, God, you poor dumb fool." type. See, up until a few years ago, I had the worst sense of direction. Coupled with a crippling shyness, though some would argue stubbornness, to ask for directions. Which lead me to getting seriously lost when ever I traveled.

For example, I traveled from South East Virginia to northern, mid border of North Carolina to check out condos for a move. I got lost returning to Virginia. How lost you ask? By the time I forced myself to go up to a stranger's house to ask directions, I was at the North Carolina/South Carolina border.

Yeah...like I said, poor, dumb fool.

There there was the time I was out of the US and her territories for the first time. I was in London. First day. I forgot the name of my hotel. I got lost. Wounded up wandering the city from 4 in the afternoon to five in the morning ON FOOT before I accidentally stumbled onto the hotel. My feet were messed up for weeks after that. The straps of the sandals I was wearing at the time were ill fitting to begin with. After that I had scars from where they had dug into my skin. Years and years later you can still see the faint scars.

Say it with me...poor dumb fool.

Helped pull a guy out of a wrecked car on a train track with a train coming.

Stopped a guy dragging a dog behind his car on a highway.

Directed rush hour traffic around another dog who'd been hit by a car until someone gave me a blanket, so I could pull the dog off the road (she was way too big for me to just carry). I adopted the dog from the pound, but she was too badly damaged to be fixed, so I sat with her while my vet put her to sleep.

I found a lost seal once. I was walking home by the river and it literally flopped up the bank onto the path in front of me. This was in college, on campus, so I ran into the nearest building and we called the zoology department from there, in the hopes that they'd have a better idea what to do than we did. They sent someone down and called the seal sanctuary, but it was a couple of hours before anyone could get there since the sanctuary was down on the coast (where you'd expect it to be, really). So I stayed with the seal until they arrived.

Turned out it was a baby that had gotten lost and headed upriver searching for its mother. They named it after me in their records, too.

Of course, one of the first things the sanctuary guys said when they arrived was 'nobody touch it, it might bite or have bacteria', and I had to hurriedly pretend I hadn't been petting it on and off for the past hour. Oopsie. It never bit me though. I think it was just too damn tired. We were a fair way inland, and who knows when it had first gotten lost.

Weirdest damn day of my life, that. I was walking home with the shopping, in a city a fair way inland, and a random baby seal literally flopped out of the river into my path. It took me a couple of seconds to believe I was seeing what I was seeing.

I saved a stray kitten! Found him in my parking lot in the middle of winter one night (and this is Minnesota winter, so like, you die if you are outside too long). I coaxed him out from under my car, brought him inside, and now he's been my cat for several years. Best cat ever.

I guess it's not flashy, but it's probably my proudest moment.

Lived in a succession of motels, trailer parks, and campgrounds, for a vast swathe of my childhood. Which only really sucked during tourist season. During the off-season I would basically wander around in the woods with my cat and watch bugs.

Talked my parents out of buying "sure thing" real estate that literally didn't exist. The second time. Never managed to convince them the first time, so I had to get stern with them the second time.

I have read and evaluated just about every type of messed-up UFO cult literature that's out there. I'm talking not-quite-Heaven's-Gate level messed-up, but there was the folks who thought the aliens channeled by their high priestess were telling them to inject themselves with formaldehyde in minute doses (yeah so they all got sick, but that was just proof "it's working") to "delete their mitochondrial DNA" so it could be replaced with the Zetarian DNA when the ships landed in (IIRC) 1998 or thereabouts (when the ships never landed, the Zetarians told the high priestess the project was put on hold). Those ones stand out in my memory.

Walking across the US coast to coast would probably be it.

Hmm, I think I need to work on my craziest/weirdest/coolest thing list.

I don't think most of these are weird or crazy? Maybe they are though.

- dove in the Great Barrier Reef
- drove across the continental US in 4 days
- climbed Mt. Fuji
- got about half a foot away from a resting bull shark (there were two of - them in a coral swim through)
- drove down a logging road with a 800ft drop on one side while high on shrooms
- crossed multiple train trestles with 400-700ft drops without rails or walkways
- rode an elephant

Can't think of anything else right now, but I've done a lot of shit that some people probably wouldn't consider sane but was perfectly reasonable at the time.

I laundered money for a group based primarily in Russia to pay off school debts, and came this close of being arrested. I'm convinced the FBI only let it slide because there were bigger fish to fry in the same business.

I jumped into a lake during the winter. I was staying in a place with a 2 story lake house & you could jump off the 2nd story into the lake. The lake was cold as fuck but it was rewarding.

FYI, it's like the breath gets yanked out of your body and pins and needles all over. It's also a bitch to climb out by ladder because your body goes numb but whatev, man, it was fun to have done it.

I once cured a girl of vaginismus with my magical healing cock.

I know that sounds stupid. I know it IS stupid. I know it makes little, if any, medical sense. I know it's a fairly embarrassing fandom trope, not something real. BUT IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

Got bored so I went and got a bus license. It took about 2 hours all up, including a practical driving lesson.

eta. Read the others and felt inadequate, have some more:

- Piloted a small plane (2 person hobby plane)
- Yachting trip with a boat absolutely not made for 40 knot winds and 3 metre waves BUT WE LIVED and gonna do a (perferably safer) trip again.
- Decided I wanted to move states, 7 days later I was househunting.
- swam with sharks

...one day I will swim with platypus *_*
