Re: People you thought you knew.

I'm not? There was a guy at my high school who was 18 and dating a 15 year old at the same school, and though it was consensual, the girl's parents were mad about the relationship and because of the age difference they accused him of statutory rape and he was registered as a sex offender. I don't know where this guy is now or if that ever resolved, but it made me mad to think that he could be registered on the same level as rapists and people who molest others. (and for the record, I very much support statutory rape laws, but two high school kids who take a class together? ugh.)

this is ayrt, by the way. and after I commented, I looked up sex offender crimes, and apparently even public urination can get you that label. not all crimes that can get you a "sex offender" label are equal at all, and that's why I have a problem with that system.

Re: People you thought you knew.

This is ayrt, the website is actually pretty detailed in what crimes have been committed by each. It doesn't just say "sex offender" and leave it at that. Each dot is color coded in what crimes they committed (this can be anything from rape, to child pornography, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, etc.) and all the crimes they were charged for are gone into detail. So if they sexually abused a minor, it even says what age the minor was. And they have to register their age as well.

That's completely irrelevant when the person doesn't deserve their name on the list in the first place. It's no one's fucking business, even if we do charge it as a crime, and it's disgusting that they should be labeled as basically a rapist or pervert. The sex offender registry system should exist to protect people from dangerous people. Not as a scarlet letter for people who made the mistake of dating teenagers a year or two younger than them.

What are you even on about? The website doesn't even have these people who committed a minor offense on there. It only registers the dangerous people.

why do you think all sex offender crimes are the same? since you indignantly accused the commenter of trolling.

Re: People you thought you knew.

The ones that involve nonconsensual content or an adult handling a minor with a significant age difference between them (meaning something that isn't even covered in more lenient states with a 5 year difference)? Yes, I consider that all the same and think they deserve to be registered as sex offenders.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
okay. so you think things that aren't rape are the same as rape. got it.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that you think a crime involving nonconsensual content, meaning someone in involved is not giving their consent in what ever actions are taking place "isn't involving rape" is creepy as fuck. I didn't think you were a troll, but I certainly hope you're one now.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
lol you already said upthread you think all sex offender crimes are equal. And you reiterating that you think raping someone is on the same level as a seventeen year old dating a twenty-two year old consensually (though you kind of backtracked there, as you basically also include a sixteen year old and an eighteen year old in your EQUAL SEX CRIMES definition). Or peeing in public, hell. I think it's fucking offensive that you equate rape with crimes that aren't rape, because rape is a serious fucking crime. I hope you're a troll.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
A troll trying to call other people trolls. I'm done here. You're accusing people of things that they never said (such as pulling a 16 year old and 18 year old example out of thin air or peeing in public when I never included that in what I consider a sex offender). I already explained anything within the 5 year age gap that was originally meant for high school students is fine. You on the other had have just admitted you think nonconsensual content is fine and dandy, so please get therapy if you're not doing this out of boredom.

It really varies based on state. I don't know the current law in NJ, but the age of consent used to be 16. That means under 16 you couldn't consent to any sex, but over 16 you could consent and the other party could not be more than 4 years older.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
This to me seems like a reasonable compromise, since it probably involves high school relationships. Anything of a bigger age difference though comes off as completely skeevy to me.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
The age of consent in my state is 18, and age difference can't be over 2 years for minors. So yeah, lots of potential "sex offenders" out there in normal high school relationships.
