Re: People you thought you knew.

I kinda hate how all sex offenders are grouped together when, imo, the crimes are not all equal

Please tell me you're trolling.

Relationship with a three year age gap is way different from 40 year old molesting a six year old.

Is there a marker or something that lists what they're on the list for? Like, is a sex offender who was a 19 year old sleeping with a 17 year old differentiated on the list in any way from someone who molests children? I've never been to check and don't really want to, so I don't know.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes there is. The markers are different colors depending on what crime it is. All the crimes are separated and you can see everything they've been charged with.

Also in most states there's like a 4 year gap between an adult and a minor given if the relationship started when both were underage. It's about registering creepers who knowingly break the law, from rape, sexual assault, kidnapping, etc.

Not necessarily true: In the three states I've lived in, if both you and your partner are above 16 and within 25months of age, regardless of above/below 18, you're legal, but if you miss the cutoff by one day, it's statutory rape. Even so, the only difference is if one person is age of majority, then -- the parents/etc can't cry rape, only the underage person can.

And true, most places have some indicators on their Megan's Law lists. But people never pay attention to them, so they just all assume every person is raping toddlers and selling them into slavery. For all OP knows, their high school acquaintance could have been 17 and sent the picks to his girlfriend at the time.

Not in my state, at least the last time I looked at the sex offender registry list.

Actually, it does bug me that say people who are just one year above the age limit who have sex with boy/girlfriend who is just under the age limit and get charged with statutory rape are in the same category with others on the sex offender list. That really isn't the same thing as say someone who is four or five years older and/or in a position of authority and taking advantage of the underage person.

An 18 year old sleeping with a 15 year old isn't quite the same as pedophilia.

A forty year old sleeping with a fifteen year old isn't quite the same as peadophilia.

They're very distinct problems that need to be dealt with in very different ways from both a social and law enforcement perspective.

But appreciating that nuance means you must inherently support the other? It's fucking bizzarre.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Erm, yes. Yes it is. This bullshit argument is what creepy old men say to justify them raping children. It's still creepy and more to the point it is still illegal.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but no, it isn't. A fifteen-year-old is not an adult, but is a far cry from a pre-pubescent child, and there is a VAST difference between an eighteen-year-old and someone in their thirties or forties.

Also, if you think it's only ever men who do this, you're either terribly naive or willfully ignorant.

Except I'm not talking about a creepy old man, weirdo. I'm talking about an eighteen year old that might be very close to the fifteen year old's maturity level.

There are plenty of cases of kids (usually guys) getting put on sex offender lists because their high school lovers are under the age of consent, they're just over it, and the other's parents are assholes.

"Hey, you're my son and you're gay apparently? I hate that! Oh hey your boyfriend's just turned 18. I'm going to get him put on a sex offender list."

Hey rad!fem! Saw you down thread a bit, and was wondering if you'd join our conversation for a chance to show off how fucking crazy you are, even for a troll.

Re: People you thought you knew.

ntayrt, but I kind of agree?

In some places, if you have sex with your underaged girlfriend- even if the age difference between the two of you is less than a year- can get hit with a sex offender claim.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not? There was a guy at my high school who was 18 and dating a 15 year old at the same school, and though it was consensual, the girl's parents were mad about the relationship and because of the age difference they accused him of statutory rape and he was registered as a sex offender. I don't know where this guy is now or if that ever resolved, but it made me mad to think that he could be registered on the same level as rapists and people who molest others. (and for the record, I very much support statutory rape laws, but two high school kids who take a class together? ugh.)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
this is ayrt, by the way. and after I commented, I looked up sex offender crimes, and apparently even public urination can get you that label. not all crimes that can get you a "sex offender" label are equal at all, and that's why I have a problem with that system.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This is ayrt, the website is actually pretty detailed in what crimes have been committed by each. It doesn't just say "sex offender" and leave it at that. Each dot is color coded in what crimes they committed (this can be anything from rape, to child pornography, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, etc.) and all the crimes they were charged for are gone into detail. So if they sexually abused a minor, it even says what age the minor was. And they have to register their age as well.

It really varies based on state. I don't know the current law in NJ, but the age of consent used to be 16. That means under 16 you couldn't consent to any sex, but over 16 you could consent and the other party could not be more than 4 years older.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
This to me seems like a reasonable compromise, since it probably involves high school relationships. Anything of a bigger age difference though comes off as completely skeevy to me.

Re: People you thought you knew.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
The age of consent in my state is 18, and age difference can't be over 2 years for minors. So yeah, lots of potential "sex offenders" out there in normal high school relationships.

I have to agree. Under the law in most states a seventeen year old who takes a nude selfie to send to her teenage boyfriend is the same as a grown adult who lures children to his basement to rape. For me, those two things are no where near the same and, yet, again, under the law, that teenager would have to register herself as a sex offender.

... for distribution of child pornography. This system is so good at distinguishing actually really different situations, woo.
