Otherwise you could just pick any somewhat known movie you haven't seen yet but would like to and see if there's a German version. In Germany movies are generally dubbed, so you won't have any problems finding movies. I recommend watching movies you haven't seen yet because the difference in voices and dialogue can get pretty jarring, IMO. Animated shows and movies are best because there's no chance of mental disconnect of seeing an actor you know on screen but hearing a different voice.
As for books I recommend Ralf Isau if you like fantasy. I love the Neschan trilogy, though Das Netz der Schattenspiele was also great. Der Kreis der Dämmerung declined in the last two books if you ask me, but I liked the first two.

Cornelia Funke is another great author. Der Herr der Diebe is fantastic, and so is the Tintenherz trilogy, apparently (it's one of things that I've been meaning to get for years but never got around to, but everyone who's read them thinks they're great).

Ottfried Preußler is the author of really popular children's literature. Everyone will be familiar with at least one of his works. Most popular are Räuber Hotzenplotz, Die kleine Hexe, Das kleine Gespenst und Der kleine Wassermann. If you want something darker, try Krabat. The English title used to be The Satanic Mill, which really tells you everything you need to know about Krabat. There's also an excellent film adaption made in 2008. (Not sure how faithful the movie is to the book, as all I remember about the book that it was freaking me out. But the movie also freaked me out, so it was faithful in that regard. In hindsight I might have been too young to read Krabat when I did.)

If you like plays, try Dürrenmatt. My personal favourite is Romulus der Große, but Der Besuch der alten Dame, Die Physiker and Der Meteor are also great. The novella Der Richter und sein Henker is also good.

Viel Spaß!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)Oh, and for music I recommend the acapella band Wise Guys. It's hard to say which one I like best, but I really adore Weltmeister, Am Anfang, Jeden Samstag, Aber sonst Gesund, Sing mal wieder and Nur für Dich.
Die Fantastischen Vier, Wir sind Helden, Juli, Die Toten Hosen and Die Ärzte are also good bands. Christina Stürmer has some good songs (I like Engel fliegen einsam, Liebt sie dich so wie ich? and Ich lebe.)
And some random songs I like:
Blumentopf - Systemfuck

Annett Louisan - Das Spiel

Silbermond - Symphonie

Echt - Du trägst keine Liebe in dir

Oh, and Reinhard Mey! I like his funny songs the most (Klempner, Der Mörder ist immer der Gärtner, Ankomme Freitag den 13., Der Schuss im Backoven, Annabell,...) but his more serious songs are also great. Basically, everything single of his songs. Except Über den Wolken, I cannot stand that song. :/
