German movies/shows/songs recommendations

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm learning German in college and I would appreciate media recommendations to practice the language and getting familiar with it. Just give me anything that is entertaining.

Danke schön.

Rammstein is a pretty great band. From what I've seen there's quite a lot of people in fandom who learnt a little bit of German through their songs.

Don't! I've enjoyed their songs a lot more before learning what they're about.

Getting into Rammstein while taking Intro German in college did weird things for my vocabulary.

We watched a couple episodes of Türkisch für Anfänger in one of my classes and it was pretty funny. I've always meant to see Das Leben der Anderen because everyone says it's really good. If you're interested in music I really like Philipp Poisel and a little bit of Wir sind Helden. And I also recommend reading kids' books (my professor especially loved them), maybe your library has some. We read picture books by Janosch, for chapter books Emil und die Detektive and Oskar, Rico, und die Tieferschatten (probably my favorite). Though you probably have enough reading to do for class :)

I enjoyed the movie Lola rennt myself, and the acapella group Vocaldente, if that helps? And I think the Asterix and Obelix movies in German, plus you could see about getting your hands on the comics, maybe? Or just see if you can get a German version of a book you really like.

Oh Lola rennt is a good one! Forgot about that. And very easy to understand without subtitles.

Yep! It made it super helpful for me, at least. :D

Also, OP, you might like the movie M, but I don't know for sure; it depends on how much you like suspence/drama, as it's a film from 1931 about a serial killer of children, and the people trying to catch him.

So.... Good movie, but kind of dark.

Aren't Asterix and Obelix French originally?

Run Lola Run (Lola Rennt in German) and Goodbye Lenin are both two great movies in German.

I'd also recommend seeing if your college library has any children's books in another language, that's usually the easiest way to pick up a new language. I actually have Harry Potter in several languages and it's helped me retain my Spanish.

Definitely check out films, your college should have them on DVD if you can't get them downloaded.

I don't know what level you're at but I'm doing a degree in German, so...

I enjoy looking up the "Extra 3" videos on Youtube. It's a German satirical show and I've found every segement very funny, especially "Die Sendung mit dem Klaus" (a parody of the children's show "Die Sendung mit der Maus").

And I'm currently reading a novel by David Safier called "Ploetzlich Shakespeare", about a woman who finds shares a body with William Shakespeare and vice-versa... actually, everything I've read by him is fantastic and really funny - "Mieses Karma", "Happy Family" and "Jesus liebt mich" (which I think is a film now, maybe you could watch that).

Seeed and Peter Fox. Although Seeed's songs are often not only in German but in different languages.

Try giving Eisbrecher a listen.

Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire and Faraway Soclose, its sequel. Most people know the first movie as the inspiration for "City of Angels" but it is a most superior movie.

Lola rennt and Goodbye Lenin have already been mentioned. If you're more into humour, try Der Schuh des Manitu.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Der_Schuh_des_Manitu

Otherwise you could just pick any somewhat known movie you haven't seen yet but would like to and see if there's a German version. In Germany movies are generally dubbed, so you won't have any problems finding movies. I recommend watching movies you haven't seen yet because the difference in voices and dialogue can get pretty jarring, IMO. Animated shows and movies are best because there's no chance of mental disconnect of seeing an actor you know on screen but hearing a different voice.

As for books I recommend Ralf Isau if you like fantasy. I love the Neschan trilogy, though Das Netz der Schattenspiele was also great. Der Kreis der Dämmerung declined in the last two books if you ask me, but I liked the first two.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralf_Isau

Cornelia Funke is another great author. Der Herr der Diebe is fantastic, and so is the Tintenherz trilogy, apparently (it's one of things that I've been meaning to get for years but never got around to, but everyone who's read them thinks they're great).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelia_Funke

Ottfried Preußler is the author of really popular children's literature. Everyone will be familiar with at least one of his works. Most popular are Räuber Hotzenplotz, Die kleine Hexe, Das kleine Gespenst und Der kleine Wassermann. If you want something darker, try Krabat. The English title used to be The Satanic Mill, which really tells you everything you need to know about Krabat. There's also an excellent film adaption made in 2008. (Not sure how faithful the movie is to the book, as all I remember about the book that it was freaking me out. But the movie also freaked me out, so it was faithful in that regard. In hindsight I might have been too young to read Krabat when I did.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otfried_Preu%C3%9Fler

If you like plays, try Dürrenmatt. My personal favourite is Romulus der Große, but Der Besuch der alten Dame, Die Physiker and Der Meteor are also great. The novella Der Richter und sein Henker is also good.

Viel Spaß!

Oh, and for music I recommend the acapella band Wise Guys. It's hard to say which one I like best, but I really adore Weltmeister, Am Anfang, Jeden Samstag, Aber sonst Gesund, Sing mal wieder and Nur für Dich.

Die Fantastischen Vier, Wir sind Helden, Juli, Die Toten Hosen and Die Ärzte are also good bands. Christina Stürmer has some good songs (I like Engel fliegen einsam, Liebt sie dich so wie ich? and Ich lebe.)

And some random songs I like:

Blumentopf - Systemfuck
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx6rDr9xkhs

Annett Louisan - Das Spiel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3gWmMJ5cO4

Silbermond - Symphonie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H16zgOpfUSU

Echt - Du trägst keine Liebe in dir
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN8ZLw0TdKQ

Oh, and Reinhard Mey! I like his funny songs the most (Klempner, Der Mörder ist immer der Gärtner, Ankomme Freitag den 13., Der Schuss im Backoven, Annabell,...) but his more serious songs are also great. Basically, everything single of his songs. Except Über den Wolken, I cannot stand that song. :/

I saw people recommending a parody, but you should try "Die Sendung mit der Maus" itself. It's for kids, but pretty informative and probably easy to get into - a mixture of explaining technology, science, comedy scetches and short stories.
Many adults like it as well and the people speak mostly slowly and clear.

+Simsalagrimm, it's about Grimm's fairy tales and subversions of thereof.

Some anime have German subs as well, if you don't need something particular German. Many people like the German digimon dub and openings e.g

Personally, I really, really hate Rammstein, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Music: I think Die Ärzte are pretty entertaining. There are quite a few German/Austrian bands which all sound quite similar (Wir sind Helden, Silbermond, Christina Stürmer) that belong to the pop genre. I like Ich&Ich as well. Unheilig is another matter of taste, but the singer has a pretty clear pronounciation, so that might be helpful?
You could also try German/Austrian musicals, like Elisabeth or Tanz der Vampire if that's more your kind of music.

Movies/Series: If you're not too weirded out by it, you could try looking for German dubs of shows you already know? Most big American shows have been dubbed already. For a real classic in German TV, look for Tatort - it's the longest running crime series in Germany. If you want to look into some comedy/cabaret, stay away from anything Mario Barth. Comedians in general can be quite tricky because of their dialects.
Rainald Grebe is my personal favourite cabaret artist, but he's... interesting ahaha.

Books: Krabat by Ottfried Preußler (It's my absolute favourite. But it might have some difficult vocabulary for the start? But it has an English translation - The Satanic Mill - and a concept album by A.S.P. which is based on both the book and the legend it's based on.)
Another classic I loved when I was a kid is "Die Rote Zora" by Kurt Held/Kläber.
Cornelia Funke has a few cute books as well.
Having German translations of a book you already know might also be helpful?

I'm now taking German 4 but these are cool to watch:
World on a Wire (sci fi)
Im Juli (weird rom com)
I was Nineteen (East German film on the end of WWII)
Traumschiff Surprise (Star Trek/Wars parody)
