If you're on the verge of being committed, for the sake of self-preservation, it's what you need to do. Not saying you shouldn't seek help for it at another point, but priorities.

If you are a DANGER to other people you damn well should NOT lie about it!

Nothing in the post indicates OP is, I just added it for clarification, those are generally the only two reasons you can get locked up. I suspected more it might be the latter. Presenting behavior that might be seen as self-destructive.

But you clearly said that even if OP thinks they might be a danger to themselves or others, they should LIE ABOUT IT. That's a very irresponsible piece of advice to give someone.

To the wrong people, who might commit them against their will? Hell yes.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
It takes a lot to be committed long-term. If you honestly feel you may be a danger to yourself or others, a 24-hour stay might not be the worst idea in the world.

Well, that's tricky, even for a non-suicidal person. You might not know who the wrong people are until it's too late. Doesn't mean it's not a genuine issue, though.

It might not just be for 24 hours, now, is it?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, the reality is you'll be kicked OUT of care at the earliest opportunity.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
For real. My friend's family had to fight tooth and nail to keep her in care when she was severely depressed and suicidal because they wanted to discharge her.

Just what place are we talking about where the people in charge want to hold on to those committed forever and ever and ever? We're not exactly talking Bedlam.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Really? What jurisdiction? My partner used to work as a solicitor representing people trying to get OUT of care, in northern Australia, and boy, the stupid reasons used to keep people in made her very ragey. Usually the clients kept in for stupid reasons were not white.

Holy crap, I'm so glad someone finally went and said it. I had similar experiences (but mostly with minors) who were basically stripped of all agency, because controlling parents either thought keeping them in was "the right thing" or because they simply wanted to hide their problem child away from the world. I know of way more examples of people going in against their will, than being kicked out against their will (I'm in Europe). The most horrific example I know was a sexual abuse victim who is bipolar basically being coerced by her mother to have electroshock therapy (I didn't even know that shit still existed till then), and because she's financially dependent on her mother and meek and gentle in nature, she did it. She now as massive memory loss, but hey, she's more manageable. And with any luck she actually forgot her abuser! This particular girl was an adult (barely), but still dependent. It disgusts me so much I want to vomit.

If it takes longer than that so that someone can GET MEDICAL CARE, then yes.
