I loved the absolute shit out of it. It had the tone of the first three games while still retaining everything I liked about AJ, and even though it had more specialized mechanics than any other game in the series, I thought it felt organic and not gimmicky at all. The music was wonderful in general, but Blackquill's theme and the Mood Matrix theme are two of my favorite AA songs ever. Athena and Blackquill themselves are awesome. Also, Phoenix and Edgeworth are clearly fucking.

The only thing missing was Franziska.

I loved it, too! I didn't start with the highest hopes (I really didn't like AJ because... several reasons), but I was pleasantly surprised. I really liked it, liked the new characters (ATHENA!) and loved the way recurring characters were handled (Apollo got a backstory! And goals! And a subplot of his own!).
And yeah, I don't even ship P/E, but the shipping potential is blatant. XD Edgeworth went to Trucy's magic show and that's so cute I just can't.

Franziska should have been there just so that she could meet Aura. XD
I missed Maya a bit, too, but I can see why they couldn't just cram her in. I really liked her letter, though, and Pearl's mention that she's coming to visit soon after the DLC case. It was a nice touch.

As for the music, for me it's a tie between Blackquill's theme and the Phantom's.
I also really liked the twist at the end. I was caught completely by surprise. I didn't even LIKE Fulbright while playing, but after finding out the truth I felt so, so bad for him. Playing the extra case while knowing it was kind of weird. It was all "aww, look at that cutie-- oh wait, he's dead and that's actually the Phantom-- BUT LOOK AT THAT CUTIE!"

Aww, Maya's letter. I had been hoping there was a chance she would make an appearance, but that letter just made me miss her more. Gumshoe also. For most of the game I was all, "Where's Gumshoe. Why isn't the detective Gumshoe. Why isn't the detective Ema." Of course, at the end, I thought, "MAYBE I'M GLAD IT WASN'T GUMSHOE OR EMA."

The funny thing about that was, I guessed at Fulbright's FIRST APPEARANCE that he was a bad guy.* But then when we found out what the deal was, I got really sad about him too. Because, if the real Fulbright was really like that? :(

It is my headcanon that Franziska and Simon become best friends after Dual Destinies, so I hope she would meet Aura. She would LOVE Aura.

*It was because he had peaked lapels. I once wrote an academic paper on the semiotics of peaked lapels and now I see it everywhere; the upshot is that peaked lapels in visual media tend to indicate villains. This is played extremely straight in Ace Attorney.

Yeah, it was for the best that it wasn't Gumshoe. XD Gumshoe is one of the reasons why I didn't really like Fulbright. I mean, we already had a bumbling detective, why should we need a new one that only seemed 100% more annoying?
Of course I saw why later. Oh yes I did.

Also, the way you realized "Fulbright" was the big bad is pretty interesting and hilarious at the same time. XD And yeah, I felt bad for him. I'm pretty sure he really WAS the way the Phantom depicted him (he had to be accurate to steal his identity without anyone noticing anything odd), and that makes everything even sadder. He didn't deserve to die.
As for the Phantom, he's just as sad. Really. One of the most pitiful characters in the whole series.

Oh man, the game revived the P/E shipper in me, big time. I honestly just consider it canon at this point.

The only thing that disappointed me about DD was that during the entire phantom reveal, my brain was screaming "Kristoph...KrisTOPH...KRISTOPH"

And then nothing.

I didn't really like Kristoph so I can't say I hoped it would turn out to be him, but didn't we get a nice subtle reference to him when Phoenix sees Athena's black Psyche-locks?
(I kinda wish Kristoph's locks were explained at some point. It was the only thing about him I really found interesting, and they were just forgotten about.)

Right? I was trying to figure that out, but only ended up with more questions. What is it about Kristoph's crimes that's locked in his subconscious? The only idea I've got is that he hasn't admitted to himself that maybe his inability to get over being fired by Zak Gramarye had more to do with him than it did to do with Zak or Phoenix. I don't find that explanation completely satisfactory, though.

Yeah, same. Feels more like it was a convenient plot device to keep Phoenix from learning too much too soon, with a half-assed explanation on WHY those locks would be unbreakable. It's great that we got a better explanation about black Psyche-locks in DD, but... I still can't really figure out how that would apply to Kristoph.

Wasn't it weird that Kristoph really didn't come up at all in the whole game? It was like they were retconning AJ away entirely, even though Apollo and Trucy and Klavier were right there.

Yeah, I'm fairly sure the writers and/or translators are putting in Phoenix/Edgeworth stuff on purpose now. Maybe it's queerbaiting, but I don't even care. I mean, "(This immense tension between us... It's like we're picking up right where we left off.)"? "Don't lecture ME on matters of the heart, Edgeworth!"? The argument over who has the better eye for aesthetics??? Having them make out onscreen could hardly be less subtle.

To be fair, they left out a great deal of things that were supposedly important in AJ. The whole thing about Apollo and Trucy being siblings, for example (WHERE the hell is their mother, and WHEN the hell does she exactly plan on telling them the truth? Won't Phoenix say anything?), and then the whole thing about the Jurist System were just forgotten about.
It was especially jarring in the latter case: the Jurist System was supposed to be a Big Deal, the ultimate goal of AJ, and then... poof. Nothing. Nada. Gone. Jurist System? Never heard of it.

That was kinda weird. An explanation wouldn't have hurt.

Well, a 6th game has been commissioned, so maybe they'll tie up the loose ends there. Especially since the lack of resolution seems to be the ultimate and only complaint about DD.

This is true. Maybe Kristoph will make an appearance? Maybe he'll have something to do with the Phantom after all?

I'd pay money to get more of the Phantom. And yeah, I guess it may be a good chance to clear up things with Kristoph, too.

Seriously, I kept wondering when someone was going to mention that Apollo and Trucy were siblings. There's this short fic on AO3, I think written for the kink meme, where Apollo and Trucy are in love, and when they tell Phoenix, he FLIPS OUT. Phoenix could avoid this scenario pretty easily, but will he? Who can say?

I don't even know what to think about the jurist system. It doesn't really fit with the world of Ace Attorney, so I didn't mind not having to deal with it, but at the same time, what the heck, that was quite the retcon.

IF the matter is ever addressed to in canon, I expect both Trucy and Apollo to be furious at him for not telling them. I know I would be. :P

I was very much okay with no having it (as you said, it didn't really fit) but man, wasn't it jarring when I realized it just vanished with no explanation after being built up as the Big Thing Phoenix worked on for seven years.

I was always under the impression that the last trial in AJ was like beta testing, and that the Jurist System wouldn't be widely used for at least a few more years?

Hey, that would be a good explanation! It's a shame they didn't even use it, though. It would have taken care of some inconsistency problems.
