I wish people on both sides of the whole label thing would acknowledge that people are different. Some people don't care and that's fine. Some people do care and that's also fine. Just label yourself if you want to and don't force labels onto other people that they don't want.

Personally I like my labels. For me it's a bit like getting diagnosed. I know there's this thing that makes me different and sometimes it's nice to know that there's a name for it and it's a recognized thing that happens.

I see labels as a tool to understanding oneself, all good if you don't let them limit you too much

Congratulations on getting older, OP.

I feel sorry for all these raised-by-Tumblr kids who are going to wake up out of puberty, and realize just how small, alienating, and truly depressing, the little boxes they've created for themselves with their forty bajillion labels really are. Not to even touch on the problem OP mentions, that they often treat these prison cells like their hill to die on.

Myself, I much prefer: Human. Most equipment original, some partially undocumented features present at manufacture, original warranty voided.

You're confusing "identity" with "label."
rubbertea: hugh skinner making a ridiculous face while wearing a ridiculous hat (hugh does that hat even exist)

I've never cared much about labels but I stopped caring altogether when I realised gender expectations and roles are complete bullshit

Do you what you want to do, but I hope you realize that there isn't a man alive who is everything a man is "supposed" to be. It's impossible to fit a list of criteria that is constantly changing, for one, and for another if all dudes were actually like how most of them purport to be when socializing with other dudes, we'd be a race of robots.

Really boring robots. Who all liked all sports and instantly had boners whenever possible and definitely fucked models all the time.

People who are determined to label themselves or won't interact with other people are tedious. I appreciate that our increasingly structureless society is leaving some people with a need to impose order, but yeesh, go organise your sock drawer or something instead. People are more than the sum of their descriptors.

Can we stop?

Labels are no always superfluous ways for a person, especially a young person, to feel fancy or speshul. They can be part of an identity and the process of "trying on" various labels is part of figuring out just what that identity is. Not to mention that once you do find it, you can usually find a group of people who are like you and host socializing events or just conversations or a place to vent which is a very valuable tool.

I appreciate this comment. Yes, some people can get annoying with all the super specific labels depending on their attitude, but the smug superiority of people who go "silly kids, we're all just human" is irritating. When something has a significant impact on my life, it's nice to have an easy way to talk about it.

I think that all too often the whole business with assorted labels is that you don't fit into rigid gender roles when it's like, big deal, no one fits into rigid gender roles. Work on your hang ups and it won't matter so much that you don't "fit" the mold.

For me, it's as much a matter of pop science as pop culture--I don't feel like I have the traits that are supposedly a result of men's brain structure and hormones. Maybe I'm off chemically, or maybe all that's just as much bullshit as the "science" that used to say black people were different from white people. Either way, there isn't really any possibility for me to define as male in this society and with this framework for what men are.

I'm going to say that the focus on differences in brain structure and hormones between genders is a lot of bullshit. Because it means that an awful lot of people are aberrations.
