UGH Sansa Stark (ASOIAF)
(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)But she really is.
What I don't get is why exactly I dislike her?
There are dumber, eviler, all-around-terribler characters in the series, but she's the only one where I really go "oh god not again, here comes another Sansa chapter, whyyyy".
Everyone else in the books grew on me with time, but as of a few minutes ago I finished A Dance With Dragons and she still annoys me to hell and back. I never felt so much resentment for a fictional character, let alone one who isn't intended to be a bad guy.
I guess it's because she's so utterly bland to me?
But there are plenty of othere characters who aren't fleshed out that well either and I have no problem with them.
It utterly dumbfounds why she upsets me so much.
So, FS, if you like/dislike Sansa, I'd love to hear your reasoning!
Re: UGH Sansa Stark (ASOIAF)
(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 12:31 am (UTC)(link)But as for me - part of the reason I like her is because for a long time she was disliked for reasons that seemed pretty dumb (a girl, too idealistic, stereotypically feminine and not an awesome tomboy like Arya, suffered by comparison to Arya amongst the fanbase, was unfairly blamed for Ned's death, took too long to realize Joffrey was awful) and so there's a reaction too that.
and as for her, she seems like a character who has had a really long path of trying to learn how the world works, and a long cruel road of realizations, and it seems like her response has ultimately been to start trying to hang tough and eventually take control of her situation, and become a political player, and i respect that. she's a relatively normal and, for the world of ASOIAF, decent person cast into really awful situations and still trying to make the best of it. and i like that kind of character.
Re: UGH Sansa Stark (ASOIAF)
(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 01:02 am (UTC)(link)As one anon below said, one thing that could be held against Sansa is spinelessness.
Do you think that's a legimate argument? Because, especially in the first book, where a lot of internet-hate for her started (which is mostly stupid and/ot terrifying in its intensity) she's what, 12?
And up until the events recently portayed in the books, she did not really have responsible adults around her who would have had an positive impact on her, so for me, her being "spineless" was always on par with Jon's anger about not being told his mothers' name - something where the only good answer "well duh" is.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)Re: UGH Sansa Stark (ASOIAF)
(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 01:18 am (UTC)(link)I don't think her spinelessness is necessarily a legitimate argument, no, mostly for those reasons. I don't think she is spineless. I think she gets put into situations where she has very little in the way of power. And I also think... I mean, no one ever really tells Sansa that all this political stuff is going on. Everything Sansa's heard is the extremely idealistic, romantic version of how life works and what her role in it is. That's how her parents have trained her and that's how everyone has trained her, and she's been rewarded for thinking that way - she is The Good Daughter. And so that's how she sees the world.
And so her actions are the result, as much of anything, of her upbringing and the norms that she's internalized. And by the time those illusions get stripped away, it's too late for her to do anything - she's facing an overwhelming power. It's not just having responsible adults around her; she does have responsible adults around her, but the interactions she has with them and the actions and attitudes she sees are very specific and limited. And that results in her choices and actions. Of what she can do, and what is good and bad. And I think that getting out of that shell is essentially what her storyline is all about.
Re: UGH Sansa Stark (ASOIAF)
(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 12:33 am (UTC)(link)I...tend to fall on the side of dislike with her - but I never got far into the series*, and she hadn't yet seemed to grow a spine where I'd stopped - and that's something that always irritates me.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 12:55 am (UTC)(link)Not outright hate, just a general "was that really necessary" reaction to the entire character
Re: UGH Sansa Stark (ASOIAF)
I don't actively dislike her though, while for some reason I haven't liked much Arya in the last season. But it could be simply a matter of not liking the acting, I'm not sure about that yet.
Re: UGH Sansa Stark (ASOIAF)
Hopefully she actually gets interesting now that she's being influenced by Petyr.
Re: UGH Sansa Stark (ASOIAF)
I also like her because she's a pretty unique character. Many other fantasies have long-lost royal heirs (Dany) and badass tomboy waifs (Arya) and ladies who'd rather be knights (Brienne), and I know what type of tropes get associated with them; but a character like Sansa is uncommon. Her closest comparable character is obviously Lady Alais from The Lion in Winter, who quite literally describes herself as a pawn in a game with kings and queens and knights. But because there aren't a lot of other characters like her, one of the reasons I'm always interested to come back to her chapters is because I don't know what will happen with Sansa next.
Re: UGH Sansa Stark (ASOIAF)
I still think she's a bit naive at times, but it's because she's still young and learning who to trust and who not to trust, and tbh it's not the worst character flaw someone can have. Idk I'm interested to see where her story goes.
Re: UGH Sansa Stark (ASOIAF)
It's good for me is all. And now that she's in the Eyrie, finally thinking about how best to survive (rather than her constant foot-in-mouth that landed her in rough spots), and even reflecting on how much she misses everyone (her memory of playing with Arya in the snow ;_;), it's like I feel like she's finally aware enough to start acting on her own, rather than as someone else's play piece.
