Tim Hortons

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Is this a thing in countries other than Canada?

Yes for the US, but I think it's mostly limited to states nearby Canada. Maine used to have more Tim Hortons but DunkinDonuts has slowly been pushing them out. Where I lived in NY (west of Rochester) it was always easy to find a Tim Hortons.

I know there's some in New York City but I haven't seen them anywhere else (I live in NJ)

I'm in the US and had never heard of them before until I went to Canada. I don't get what the big deal about them is.

I think it's because it's a Canadian brand and we just get weirdly proud of having non-American stuff around. Also because it's named after a hockey player and we love us our hockey.

Ah, I went and ate at one while I was up there and could not for the life of me figure it out. What you say makes sense. Thanks.

nayrt
It was also founded by the hockey player whose name it bears (holy crap, that sentence sounds like it came out of a really weird high fantasy novel) and apparently he was a huge deal? Idk, I worked there for a while and we got a shit-ton of training on why the coffee is awesome but almost nothing on who Tim Horton is.

(Also, the store name is incorrectly punctuated. It's a dumb little thing but I noticed it once and now it won't stop bothering me .

Ha, that's interesting. Thank you.

I thought it was an interesting mix of McDonalds and Dennys when I went there.

I don't know about Eastern Canada, but from a Western Canadian perspective I also feel like Tim Hortons really appeals to a middle class, more rural demographic, as a place to get a fast cup of coffee, that isn't somewhere fancy like Starbucks, but still seems more classy than somewhere like McDonalds. (At least that's what I think explains the endless drive-in lines at Tim Hortons you see over here)

Seemed just as popular in the cities. But, yeah, I was in Western Canada.

Yeah, it is really popular in the cities too. I'm not really sure I get it either, actually

BECAUSE CANADA!

And like someone said, it's nicer than McDonald's and cheaper than Starbucks. Also more food options. And a decent 24h joint. Their soup is damn tasty.

Dennys but less likely to give you food poisoning.

Do you know someone who's gotten food poisoning from Denny's?

Oh...

Yes, much less food poisoning.

Yeah, and it was on a play night when I was working as a stagehand. Personally I think it was the location. It's not a great place.

I like them more already.

Ha, it's funny how Timmy's is so popular in Canada, and then everywhere else it's just not

It's a shame, their iced capps are delicious as hell and I would happily build an underground pipeline to get them piped down here.

Their Iced Capps are really good! I usually don't like sweet drinks, but I drink them all the time in the summer

This reminds me of a Montreal tour I did a few years back where the guide took us to a TH for breakfast and treated it like this experience was an unique and special piece of Canadian culture. Then, scant months later, I laughed and laughed to see one in New York.
