Ms. Marvel #1

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so I got the new Ms. Marvel. It's my first comic book I've bought ever, so I'm kind of new to this whole thing. I thought it looked interesting and heard people pimping it out on tumblr, so I got it. Are comic book issues really that short, because it seemed short to me? I liked the fact that she was nerdy and wrote fanfic and hope we see more stuff like that. Other stuff seemed kind of tropey, but not necessarily bad. I don't know much about Pakistani/Muslim culture, so can anyone tell me if they thought it was well done?
TLDR; What do you think of the new Ms. Marvel?

Comic book issues tend to be pretty short in general.

Thank you for reminding me that I need to read this. I've been meaning too.

But to answer your question: yes, they are just that short. This is why some people like to wait until TP's (trade paperbacks) are released and read several issues in one go. It can be a bit excruciating to read comic by comic because of the length, but a plus side is you don't have to worry about catching up.

I haven't read it yet, but about comics being short: single issues are usually that amount of pages, yes. Some people prefer to wait for trades so that they have more to read in one sitting. Now, I didn't read that issue, but some comics feel a lot shorter than others because they're decompressed story-wise or have lots of pages with mostly only art. There are comics that I feel like I finished in two minutes and others feel really long, both in a good and bad way.

I can't comment on the Pakistani/Muslim cultural aspects but it's just the kind of fun book that I like.

The issues might not seem so short when the story's further along and we're past the pilot phase of establishing everything.

Issues are pretty much that short, yes. Some can be standalone too, but think of it like manga that gets published a chapter at a time in magazines. At some point down the line you can collect various issues as an arc, or just buy the trade paperback that collects them.

Also, I am tentatively excited but mostly positive about the book :)
