Good high-iron foods on the cheap?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-02-26 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Despite living with family, I have to buy a lot of my food on my own, and I really need to bring my iron up (and I don't really want to trust iron supplements). However, whenever I look at "high-iron foods", it's either just lists of vegetables I hate (not a big vegetable person in general), or it's stuff that's not really within my grocery budget.

So, seeing as this place seems to have a lot of foodies and lots of other people with, uh, limited grocery budgets, I thought I'd ask here. Any recommendations?

The less perishable, the better, because sometimes I have to keep food up in my room if I want it to last.

I've heard that they're also very beneficial for the heart.

And the more you eat them, the better you feel.

I buy frozen spinach cubes and trick myself into eating them (mix it up in my other food/smoothies). Only thing I can think of

Despite popular belief, spinach is not good for iron, but it is good for calcium.

I don't quite know the technical details, but I know spinach is high in both, but the iron is harder to absorb. It may also be a bit to do with iron and calcium being opposing minerals - when you absorb them, one or the other with win out more, so it's best to try take them separately.

As far as things that are shelf-stable, I don't really know.

I've looked for lists, too, and it usually seems to be red meat and certain veggies like spinach and chard. I just eat a lot of kale and call it done. Beef jerky would last at least a few days in your room, but that's expensive.

Would you trust a multivitamin? Women's daily supplements tend to have iron.

If I'm not mistaken, blackstrap molasses has a very high iron content. It tastes disgusting though

I had a specific list of foods my doctor suggested to me, but I'm not going to be home for the next few days. But I do remember some of it off the top of my head since I eat them mostly every day. Like beans! Also general meat and fish (canned fish in careful quantities due to mercury). Oatmeal too, like the rolled or steel cut kind since they're miles healthier than instant stuff.

Still though, if you find you are too partial to specific foods, consider an iron supplement?

Dark grape juice, if you can drink something that sweet. All the good things they claim is in wine is in unfermented grape juice too.
