OMG Won't someone think of the poor fiction gay characters?!!?!>1

So nothing in media can be offensive as long as it's fiction? That seems to be the logical conclusion of what you're saying.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you're trolling but, the treatment of gay people in fiction contributes a lot to the way we're treated in real life.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
So by that logic then gay men should be wary of 1000 year old Nordic vampires. Since we have a shortage of 1000 year old Nordic vampires at the moment I think they will be OK.

Yes, but I'm not sure a vampire targeting gay people is supposed to convey any message other than "this character is murderous and given the pattern quite likely a homophobe." A character doing something is very different from a series glorifying it. (Though I haven't seen the show.)

Yeah, True Blood's treatment of its gay characters is questionable.

If Erik only attacked gay men then you might be onto something there. But everyone is open season to him.

OT

I love that movie so much!

Oh, yeah, it's one of those movies that if I am flipping through the channels and it's on, I'm stopping everything to watch it. Doesn't matter that I've watched it a hundred times.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
how many other regular or important characters has he killed though?

he killed sookie's fairy-godmother (which was more of an accident) and marnie's sidekick, but i can't think of anyone else.

How many other regular or important characters that he has interacted with in more than one scene WEREN'T gay?

damn, where are the 'he's murdering gay men because he's in denial of his own gayness' theories? i'm sure an argument could be made here

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I was always under the impression that Eric/vampires in general on True Blood, were all pretty omni-sexual (it has been a long time since I watched True Blood, like 2-3 seasons).

Eric is canonically bisexual, and doesn't hide the fact that he's slept with men and women over the centuries, so I don't think that argument would hold too much water ^^;

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
On Oz, chris keller was bisexual, but he killed gay men because he wanted to kill the part of him he despised.

Yup. I believe the entire saying is "Once is chance, twice is coincidence, three or more times is enemy action".

This secret is giving me a headache.

One of the reasons I like True Blood is that it has gay characters who are important to the plot. Eric tortured Lafayette because he was smack in the middle of the vampire blood trade. He killed Talbot for revenge against Russell, the best villain the show has had who, yes, Eric eventually killed, because he was the BEST VILLAIN THE SHOW HAS HAD. He killed Steve Newlin because he helped poison Eric's sister, which led to her death. These are gay characters who have had been important to the show and it's plot. Of the four, all but Talbot lasted several seasons, Lafayette for the entire series run. They're savvy, dangerous, interesting gay characters, who pull the kind of shit that eventually puts them on the radar of one of the most dangerous characters on the show. That's why they're dying or being tortured. The same actions that put on them on that radar kept them actively engaged in the plot. Why is this a bad thing?

Eric tortured Lafayette because he was smack in the middle of the vampire blood trade.

Except Eric was dealing V himself, and then proceeded to force Lafayette to deal V after he was freed.

He killed Steve Newlin because he helped poison Eric's sister

eric's sister was poisoned because he turned the governor's daughter into a vampire and taunted him about it.

and steve newlin only told them about his sister because they threatened to torture him if he didn't give them information about eric.

eric is more to blame for her death than steve was.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Except Eric was dealing V himself, and then proceeded to force Lafayette to deal V after he was freed.

And? If I remember correctly, Lafayette was already dealing V. So Eric is bad for making Lafayette deal it for him or something?

And though he tortured La, he didn't tear him apart the way he tore that redneck apart that was chained up with La - the non gay one? In fact, after he freed La and forced him into his business, he gave La a car and protected him a time or two from other threats, as well as letting La partake of V through his vein.

eric's sister was poisoned because he turned the governor's daughter into a vampire and taunted him about it.

And he turned the gov's daughter into a vamp in a misguided attempt to get the gov to STOP murdering vampires - as the gov was a bigot who thought the only good vamp was a dead one.

and steve newlin only told them about his sister because they threatened to torture him if he didn't give them information about eric.

This makes Steve less culpable, then? Steve spent most of the last season turning on the other vamps for a chance not to be really dead, after spending his life trying to obliterate them. Do you really think Eric is going to take into account the fact that Steve was 'threatened' into talking with the possibility of torture? Have you spent more than five minutes of the show watching Steve Newlin? He'd have sold the information for a bag of blood.

I'm not any more of a fan of Eric's than of Bill's or of Alcide's or any other hot supernatural guy on the show. But these are vampires and humans who do both good and bad things. Holding one more responsible than another is just...well...stupid.
